Trojan men, women drop Conference Carolinas soccer openers

MOUNT OLIVE -- Erskine (S.C.) University punched in three goals within a 42-minute span and upset regionally-ranked Mount Olive College 3-0 in their Conference Carolinas men's soccer match Saturday afternoon.
The Flying Fleet handed the Trojans, ranked No. 5 in the latest NCSAA Division II Southeast Region poll, their first loss in five outings this season.
Erskine (4-1-0, 1-0-0 CC) collected first-half goals in the 2nd, 33rd and 44th minutes. Keeper Ronnie Murray (three saves) stopped Scott Mitchell's 20-yard shot, while a defender blocked Matt Wallin's 15-yard shot in the opening half.
Mount Olive keeper Chris Slaughter halted a second-half penalty kick and smothered a kick save on a breakaway. He finished with four saves in the 90-minute match.
The Trojans return to action Monday at in-state foe Pfeiffer.
Women's soccer
MOUNT OLIVE -- Erskine's Lauren Reynolds converted a first-half penalty kick and the Flying Fleet eased past Mount Olive College 2-0 in their Conference Carolinas women's soccer opener on Saturday evening.
Amanda Tinker added a second-half goal for Erskine, which claimed its first victory in four outings this season. The Trojans remained winless in five contests.
Reynolds broke the scoreless tie in the 40th minute and Tinker provided her insurance goal in the 64th minute.
Mount Olive attempted four shots and two corner kicks in the first 15 minutes of the second half, but couldn't score. The Trojans owned a 9-3 advantage in shots and 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
