Turnovers benefit Hobbton

NEWTON GROVE -- Rosewood couldn't overcome turnovers and penalties in a 20-0, non-conference loss to Hobbton on Monday evening.

The Wildcats scored two second-quarter touchdowns off Eagle miscues.

"I thought we did a very good job in the second half, and I thought the defense played well," said Rosewood head coach Robert Britt. "We just had two early turnovers and that really cost us."

A Rosewood fumble at its own 40-yard line gave Hobbton excellent field position before leading to a touchdown. Moments later, an Eagles' interception inside their own 15 set up the second Wildcat touchdown.

"We put our defense in bad positions," said Britt. "They really only had one drive, just before halftime ... we set up their other two scores."

The Eagles' defense proved impenetrable in the second half, but the offense never found its footing.

"We got into situations where we had to throw, and it became too obvious," said Britt. "After we started throwing on first down a little bit, we started to free some things up. That's something we will take into our next game ... passing earlier in some series."

Junior defensive back Akeem Simms picked off two Hobbton passes.

"Akeem really came through with two big plays," said Britt. "He grabbed one interception at the one-yard line to prevent a score, and he grabbed a second pick in the second half."

Rosewood (1-2 overall) entertains Roanoke Rapids on Friday.
