Hawks suffer first setback

LaGRANGE -- Kinston set a new school record for points in a game and brought North Lenoir's brief winning-streak to a halt with a 65-19 rout of the Hawks on Thursday night.

The Vikings led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter and were comfortably in control with a 45-12 advantage at the half. Kinston scored on each of its offensive possessions but one, with it's final drive culminating with a kneel to end the ballgame.

"They did jump on us extremely quick," Hawks head coach Wayne Jackson said. "They're just loaded with athletes and they could take one out and put another one in. With their team speed they're much fast and quicker than we are. We just got in a hole we couldn't dig out of."

The Vikings also benefited from a 93-yard kickoff return for a score and a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown. Kinston torched the North Lenoir defense for 487 yards, including 214 yards through the air courtesy of junior quarterback Dori Hines.

Hawks fullback Marquez Powell recorded 143 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, as North Lenoir finished with 335 yards of offense.

North Lenoir (2-1) travels to rival South Lenoir next Friday.

"I told the guys after the game we don't need to let the Kinston game affect us after (Thursday) night," Jackson said. "Obviously we have to try to improve from it. We can't let it affect us next week at practice."
