Goldsboro beats Eastern Wayne for first time since 2003

Steal the momentum.

Andre Montgomery did just that Friday evening.

Moments after Eastern Wayne converted a third-quarter turnover into a touchdown, Montgomery answered the challenge. On Goldsboro's next possession, the 5-foot-8 sophomore broke loose for a 53-yard touchdown run.

"A humongous play," said Goldsboro head coach Eric Reid.

Indeed.

Montgomery's scoring gallop ignited a 23-point outburst as the Cougars rolled to a 37-6 decision over the Warriors in humid, hazy conditions at Cougar Stadium. Goldsboro claimed its first victory over Eastern Wayne since 2003 and improved to 2-0 overall this season.

The Warriors exited 1-1.

"Nothing went right tonight and all of that is on us," said Warriors head coach Jeff Price. "We weren't prepared to play like we thought we were. We may not be as good as we thought we were.

"We were out-worked ... beaten in every phase of the game."

Eastern Wayne toiled through five turnovers, including three in the opening half. However, Goldsboro couldn't take advantage of the visitors' misfortune.

The Cougars turned just one of three red-zone possessions into a touchdown. Warrior lineman Kevin Gendreau-Fowlke sacked quarterback Tyrelle Jackson to end one drive. Goldsboro fumbled its other scoring chance on fourth down.

Jackson's 19-yard scoring strike to Enrique Moses and A.J. Parker's 37-yard run put Reid's team up 12-0 at intermission.

"Simple mental mistakes and we've got to be better than that," said Reid of his team's first-half futility. "We made some bonehead mistakes that we cannot make down the road. We went in at halftime, talked about it and came out a little more focused.

"But, it wasn't where we wanted to be."

Reid's concerns worsened in the third quarter.

Goldsboro fumbled inside its own 20-yard line and Eastern Wayne gained possession. Three plays later, Hassan Best broke loose for a 9-yard touchdown run just 56 seconds into the second half.

"We felt great at that point," said Price.

Then it went downhill.

Tempers flared and led to several player ejections, and yellow flags littered the wet turf on every other play. The Warriors lost their composure and misfired on their next three possessions.

After Montgomery's 53-yard run, he added an 80-yard run that appeared negated by a clipping penalty. But the officials waved off the flag. Montgomery finished with 211 yards rushing on just 14 carries.

Jackson lofted a 33-yard touchdown pass to Moses to make it 35-6 after three quarters. Sophomore lineman Jarren Reed added the final points on a fourth-quarter safety when he blocked Steven Hall's punt out of the end zone.

"We thought we could climb back in the game after halftime, but we were wrong," said Price. "You have to commend Goldsboro. They just did everything right and if it could go wrong for us, it did."
