Goldsboro's George Worrell emerged the top male finisher during the 23rd annual Goldsboro YMCA Sprint Triathlon.

Nearly 100 competitors dueled in a half-mile swim, 20-mile bike ride and 5K run at Walnut Creek.

The 32-year-old Worrell finished first in the swim (10 minutes, 27) seconds and was among the top three in the bike ride and 5K run. Worrell posted a time of 1:17.48 and topped his nearest opponent, Grimesland's Bruce Richter, by four seconds.

Goldsboro's Frank Fisher claimed third in the overall race with a time of 1:22.58.

The top three females hail from surrounding counties. Greenville's Anne Bogey captured first in 1:36.28, followed by Joan Perry of Kinston and Agatija McCallister of LaGrange. Three minutes separated the group.

In male team action, New Bern's Over the Hill Gang grabbed first place, while the Flying Bobs from Cary picked up second place.

Later Mater, from LaGrange, took the mixed team title. Goldsboro's group of Doesn't Hurt to Tri ended up second.

Here are the age-group winners:

Male -- Fremont's Doug Johnson (15-19), Charlotte's Stockton Perry (20-24), Pikeville's Ryan Bone (25-29), Fayetteville's Damon Delarosa (30-34), Greenville's Kyle Pitchford (35-39), Pine Knoll Shores' Paul Quinn (40-44), Apex's Craig Hood (45-49), Greenville's Phillip Rowan (50-54) and Goldsboro's Mike Haney (55-over).

Johnson finished first in the swim and 5K run in his age group. Bone competed unopposed in his group, while Haney was first in the bike ride and 5K run.

Female -- Greenville's Christian Yates (15-19), Aiken's Marie Smith (20-24), Greenville's Ellen Hanley (25-29), Greenville's Lizz Nelson (30-34), Greenville's Emily Price (35-39), New Bern's Aurora Benetti (45-49) and Rocky Mount's Carol Dickens (50-54).

Goldsboro's Bethany Stamps finished third in all three events in the 25-29 group, but wound up fourth. Michelle Hancock, also from Goldsboro, competed in the 30-34 age group, was fourth in the bike ride and 5K run. Fellow Wayne County resident Kerri Crandell, from the same group, was sixth in the bike ride.

Laura Nichols (Goldsboro) and Kristen Duncan (Pikeville) also battled well within their respective age groups.
