STAFFORD, Va. -- Hunter Burt's sixth-inning hit helped keep Wayne County alive in the winners' bracket during the 2008 Babe Ruth 9U Southeast Regional on Saturday afternoon.
Wayne County claimed a 10-5 decision over Union City (Tenn.) and opposes Glen Allen (Va.) at 10 this morning. The winner advances to the regional championship, which is being played at Mountain View High School.
Union City climbed within a single run in the fifth inning until Burt's hit squelched any further comeback attempt. Burt and Tanner Bradley each collected two hits for Wayne County, while Derek Neal emerged the offensive leader with three hits.
Noah Daniels (two RBI), Blake Dean, Lee Daniels (RBI), Chandler Gentry and Cameron Kornegay each contributed offensively. Dean doubled, while Gentry tripled.
Chandler Matthews claimed the mound win. He yielded four earned runs, struck out five and walked four Union City batters in a complete-game outing.
