Wayne County 9U baseball team triumphs

WILSON -- Chandler Gentry, Derek Neal and Hunter Burt contributed two hits apiece as Wayne County defeated Winterville 12-9 in the Eastern N.C. Babe Ruth 9U state tournament on Saturday.
Wayne County (4-0) remained the lone unbeaten team in the double-elimination tournament. Directed by coach Paul Aycock, the team will play either West Raleigh, Winter Park (Wilmington) or Winterville in the title game today.
The winner advances to the Southeast Regional in Garrisonville, Va.
Gentry and Neal each collected an RBI for Wayne County. Teammates Cameron Matthews, Cameron Kornegay, Blake Dean, Tanner Wells, Noah Daniels and Lee Daniels each cranked out one hit.
Jake Flowers emerged the winning pitcher.
Wayne County advanced to the championship round with a 13-3 rout of New Bern Trent on Friday. Matthews pounded out two hits and four RBI, while Kornegay added two hits.
Noah Daniels (RBI), Evan Aycock (RBI), Dean, Tanner Bradley and Lee Daniels each supplied one hit.
Coach Aycock's squad opened tournament play with an 11-1 conquest of New Bern No. 1 on Wednesday. Wayne County posted a 13-hit effort in a second-round, 7-3 conquest of Northview.
Softball
Wayne 8Us prevail
WILSON -- Haley Brogden and Connor Vinson recorded three hits apiece as Wayne County hammered Georgia state champion Ocee Park in the Babe Ruth 8U Southeast Regional.
Brogden, who also doubled, finished with a team-leading four RBI. Vinson drove in three runs. Hannah Vinson (two RBI), Mackenzie Wheeler (two RBI), Cara Lenzi (RBI), Makayla Pelt (two RBI), Mary Beth Barwick (two RBI), Alaysha Warren (two RBI) and Carrie Ann Beckert (RBI) delivered two hits apiece.
Pelt also tripled.
Wheeler, Lenzi, Barwick, Warren and Beckert all doubled.
Wayne County stayed alive in the double-elimination tournament with a 5-3 decision over Eastern N.C. runner-up Down East from Harker's Island. Cassandra Lassiter knocked in two runs in three at-bats.
Wheeler (RBI) and Beckert each had two hits.
Brogden, Connor Vinson, Lenzi, Pelt (RBI), Haley Thurston and Warren each factored into the outcome.
Wayne 10Us triumph
WILSON -- Shaily McCarty singled and doubled, and Wayne County Thunder knocked off New Kent (Va.) 8-3 in the Babe Ruth 10U Southeast Regional on Saturday.
McCarty also drew a walk.
Allison Shingleton batted 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Alanna Price (three RBI) singled and doubled in three official plate appearances. Abbie Walton contributed two hits and and an RBI.
Allie Phillips, Rachel McCullum and Rylee Pate each had one hit.
McCullum recorded six strikeouts and threw a no-hitter in her three-inning stint in the pitcher's circle. She was named the player of the game.
Rachel Weidner supplied three innings of one-hit, eight-strikeout relief.
Wayne 14Us ousted
WILSON -- Florida took advantage of three seventh-inning errors and turned back Wayne County 4-3 in an elimination-round game in the Babe Ruth Southeast Regional softball tournament.
"The girls played hard," said Wayne coach Sam Edwards. "It was a heart breaker."
Reagan Herndon paced Wayne County with two hits, including a triple and three RBI. Meagann Tyndall doubled. Misty Edwards, Sara Marquis, Taylor Mitchell and Chris Kelly each contributed a hit.
Marquis took the mound loss in relief of Edwards.
