Chris Coghlan finished a home run short of the cycle, going 3-4 with two RBI to lead the Carolina Mudcats past the Tennessee Smokies 5-2 in front of 5,870 fans Saturday night at Five County Stadium.

Carolina (10-8) scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead, anchored by back to back triples from Coghlan and Gaby Sanchez. Alberto Concepcion got his first RBI of the game in the first inning when Sanchez came in from home while Concepcion reached on an infiled single. Concepcion's next at bat was a solo home run over the left field wall to give Carolina a 3-1 lead.

Willie Glen (W,5-2) pitched five innings for Carolina, allowing just one hit and one unearned run in leading the Mudcats to within one game of the first-place Smokies.

James Russell (L,3-4) pithed six innings for Tennessee, giving up six hits and four runs, all of them earned.
