Caroline Riggs cranked out two hits and Wayne County emerged the Babe Ruth 12U District 8 softball champion with a 7-4 victory over Kinston-Lenoir on Thursday evening.

Riggs added an RBI. Teammates Stephanie Smith, Logan Taylor (RBI) and Haley Ginn (RBI) each contributed a hit on the Grantham Sports Complex diamond.

Ginn claimed the mound win, striking out seven in six innings.

Blythe Green and Nicole Robinson paced Kinston-Lenoir with two hits apiece. Liz Deal accounted for two RBI.

WC North gets win

GREENVILLE -- Wayne County North picked up its third consecutive road win by defeating D.H. Conley 9-3 on Thursday evening.

Josh Frederick earned the win on the mound while Derek Limbaugh recorded the save.

John Taylor led Wayne County going 3-for-4 at the plate. Robert Faucette and Jeff Carmel were both 2-for-3 and Jose Pone (home run) and Zach Beachem added hits.

Wayne County North (11-8, 6-6 Area I/II Central) visits Wayne County South at 7 p.m. tonight.

WC South sinks Beaufort

BEAUFORT -- Jordan Williams tallied five RBIs and Raymond Velazquez got more than enough run support as Wayne County South (10-3, 9-2 Area I/II Central) topped Beaufort 14-9 on Thursday evening.

Williams ended the evening 2-for-4 with a double and a home run. Scott Holloman was 2-for-3 with a double, a homer, two RBI and three runs scored. Cody Richards and Dontay Boseman each had two hits and an RBI.

Keenan Winn (RBI) and Will Beasley (2 RBIs) both pitched in hits.

Velazquez allowed three runs on five hits with five strikeouts and five walks in 4 2/3 innings.

SH outlasts NL

SNOW HILL -- Derrick Grant's game-winning hit helped Snow Hill Post 94 earn a 9-8 victory over North Lenoir in nine innings on Thursday evening.

Will Bynum (RBI) paced the Snow Hill offense with a 4-for-5 performance. Jasper Jones went 3-for-5 and Matt Jones and Wes Sowers each contributed a pair of hits.

Grant earned the win on the mound in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

Snow Hill (10-6, 8-5 Central) visits Wayne County North at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
