Thunder rumbled through the Grantham Sports Complex on Wednesday evening and washed out opposing teams' hopes of advancing beyond the Babe Ruth District 8 tournament.

The Wayne County Thunder 8U and 10U punched their tickets for state-tournament play with victories over Greene County and Kinston-Lenoir, respectively.

Makenzie slugged a grand-slam home run and finished the night 2-for-3 as the Thunder 8U squad hammered Greene County 16-5. Cara Lenzi provided three hits and Carrie Ann Beckert batted 2-for-2.

Rachel McCullum claimed the mound win, surrendering one hit and posting five strikeouts in a three-inning stint for the 10U team in 10-3 victory. Offensively, McCullum provided two hits, a double and triple, and two RBI.

Keely Fulghum tripled, while Allison Shingleton delivered two hits and an RBI. Tori Hudson went 1-for-2 with three RBI.

In the 12U game, Kinston-Lenoir remained alive in losers' bracket play with victories over Greene County and Wayne County (12-1). Kinston-Lenoir forced a "winner-take-all" contest against Wayne County today at 7:30 p.m.

Jennifer Pate doubled and Hayley Mercer concluded the game 1-for-1 for Wayne County.

Baseball

WC North prevails

Zach Mozingo pitched five strong innings and delivered two hits at the plate as Wayne County North routed West Craven 20-1 in Junior Legion baseball action on Wednesday.

Wayne County North scored in every inning during the mercy-rule shortened affair, including a six-run second frame that broke the game open.

Jordan Quinn, Robert Fossett, Jose Ponce, Derek Limbaugh, Josh Frederick and Hunter Newsome recorded two hits each in the win.

Wayne County North (10-8 overall) travels to D.H. Conley tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
