Eastern Wayne seizes league cup

CHAPEL HILL -- Second-place efforts in four spring sports helped Eastern Wayne capture the Wachovia Cup Conference championship in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference.

The Warriors claimed their first regular-season baseball title since 1989 and seized runner-up spots in men's tennis, men's golf, men's track and field and women's soccer. Eastern Wayne compiled 185 points, 41/2 more than Cup runner-up Wilson Hunt.

Hunt claimed ECC crowns in men's golf and women's soccer.

Charles B. Aycock, the regular-season co-champion in softball, ended up third with 164 points. The Golden Falcons took second in baseball and won their first men's tennis championship since the mid-1990s.

Southern Wayne captured its first conference title in softball since 1994 and wound up fourth with 145 points. Wilson Beddingfield (144 points) and Kinston (114.5) rounded out the six-team league.

In the Carolina 1-A ranks, North Johnston collected its fifth consecutive regular-season league crown in softball. The Panthers also took first in baseball, men's tennis and men's golf; and easily out-distanced second-place Ayden-Grifton 67-49.5.

Princeton was third with 45 points. Rosewood amassed 43 points, followed by Spring Creek (35.5) and North Duplin.

In Eastern Plains 2-A competition, Greene Central seized the Cup with outright championships in women's track and men's tennis, and a co-title in softball. The Rams compiled 57.5 points, just 1/2 point better than North Pitt.

Perennial baseball and softball power North Lenoir claimed third with 54 points. Farmville Central grabbed fourth place with 53.5 points. Tarboro and Goldsboro completed the six-team race with 48.5 and 30.5 points, respectively.

The Wachovia Conference Cup, sponsored annually by the Wachovia Bank and sanctioned by the N.C. High School Athletic Association, recognizes high school sports programs that achieve the best overall performance within their respective athletic conferences.

The Wachovia Conference Cup, formerly known as the Wachovia Trophy, is a companion to the Wachovia Cup, a statewide award presented to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each of the state's four classifications.

In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points.

Wachovia has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.
