Post 11 takes two games in legion baseball action

DUDLEY - While its opposition failed to provide much of a test on Sunday, Wayne County Post 11 got all it could handle in the form of triple-digit temperatures.

Post 11 battled through a sweltering heat to down Edgecombe County Post 316, 8-3 in the opener and knocked off Garner Post 232, 7-2 in the nightcap.

Walker Gourley's RBI single in the first gave Wayne County an early lead in game two.

After a 3-for-3 performance with four RBIs in game one, Gourley nearly finished the day 7-for-7. His bid for his seventh hit was denied on a leaping catch by Garner second baseman Trey Williams in the sixth.

Gourley ended the day 6-for-7 with five RBIs.

"It's a shame he didn't get 7-for-7," Post 11 head coach Brad Reaves said. "That last ball was the hardest one he hit. You don't expect 7-for-7 out of him but you expect good at-bats."

Jay Rose added an RBI groundout in the first.

John Wooten's RBI single in the third put Post 11 in front 3-0. Rose scored on an error and Thomas Pilkington added an RBI single. Wooten's two-run single in the fourth moved the deficit to 7-0.

Garner used a pair of walks, a single and an error to scratch across two runs in the fifth.

Wayne County starter Taylor Allen allowed two runs on two hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Adron Hollowell finished the game in relief.

"These guys are just gaining experience all the time," Reaves said. "Nobody we threw today has much experience legion wise period. They're all gaining experience heading toward conference play."

Gourley's two-run double in the bottom of the third got Wayne County on the board first in the opener.

Edgecombe County tied the game with a pair of runs on an RBI single and a sacrifice-fly in the fourth.

Hollowell scored on a wild pitch in the fifth giving Post 11 a 3-2 lead. Edwards later scored on a double-steal pushing the margin to 4-2.

Wayne County broke the game open with four runs in the sixth. Hollowell started the scoring with an RBI single. The Eastern Wayne product went 3-for-3 with an RBI in game one.

Edwards' RBI single and Gourley's two-run single put Edgecombe County in an 8-2 hole.

Gourley finished the opener 3-for-3 with four RBI. Post 316 added a run in the seventh.

Michael Douglas got the win for Wayne County allowing two earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Post 11 hosts New Bern on June 16.
