Four MOC players garner All-American recognition

SAUGET, Ill. -- Four Mount Olive College baseball players earned All-American status from three different publications, which was announced during the NCAA Division II College World Series.
Right-handed hurler Ryan Schlecht picked up first-team A-A honors on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) squad. Schlecht (13-0) also received honorable mention status on the Daktronics All-American team.
Catcher Jason Sherrer gained second-team spots from the Daktronics and NCBWA publications, and third-place recognition from Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). Sherrer's two-run single helped Mount Olive defeat Ouachita (Ark.) Baptist in the opening round of the College World Series.
Pitcher Casey Hodges was named third-team A-A by the NCBWA. Hodges threw eight superb innings in Saturday's championship game against Ouachita (Ark.) Baptist and permitted two runs (one earned) on seven hits.
Right fielder Alex Vertcnik, a junior college transfer from Wisconsin. was an honorable mention pick by the NCBWA. Vertcnik batted 2-for-3 and scored a run in the title contest against Ouachita.
Schlecht, Sherrer and Hodges are seniors.
Including five selections in 2007, Mount Olive has had nine All-Americans during the past two seasons.
