Former University of Rhode Island standout Michael Sims fired a sizzling 8-under-par 64 on Thursday to grab a share of the 36-hole lead during the Tarheel Tour's Walnut Creek Classic.
A 2007 Nationwide Tour member, Sims made six birdies and two eagles against only two bogeys to fire the low round of the day.
Sims shares the lead with first-round leader Jonathan Moore and Kyle Gallo. Moore backed up his course record-tying 63 with a solid 3-under-par 69 on Thursday. Moore threatened to run away from the field early in the second round as he birdied three of his first six holes, but he proceeded to par his final 12 holes to finish at 12-under par for the tournament.
A former All-American at Oklahoma State, Moore has yet to record a bogey in the championship.
Gallo fired his second consecutive round of 66 to complete the trio at 12-under. Gallo has played just two events on the Tarheel Tour in 2008, with his best finish coming at TPGG Classic where he finished tied for 19th.
East Carolina graduate Frank Adams III leads a quartet of players at 9-under-par 135. Adams backed up his opening-round 66 with a 3-under-par 69 in the second round. He is joined by Kevin Haefner, Matthew McQuillan and Daryl Chappell at 9-under-par.
Former University of South Carolina standout and 2006 Rock Hill Open Champion Alex Hamilton culminated a solid first 36 holes by making a hole-in-one on the 172-yard 9th hole. Hamilton's ace with a 7-iron left him at 8-under-par for the championship and into a tie for 8th.
