DURHAM -- Zach Wright mashed a ninth-inning home run as Wayne County Post 11 opened its 2008 American Legion baseball campaign with an 11-8 victory over Durham on Thursday evening.
John Wooten, who pounded out three hits, started the Post 11 ninth with a walk. Wright followed with his bases-clearing shot and ended the season-opening contest with three extra-base hits.
Wayne County, the 2007 state-runner to Cherryville, moved ahead 9-8 in the eighth inning. Spring Creek's Alex Casey connected on a two-strike hit, stole second and moved into scoring position on Bryant Hill's sacrifice fly.
Casey trotted home on Tyler Edwards' sacrifice fly.
Newcomer Adron Hollowell earned his first-ever save on the Legion scene. The Eastern Wayne standout relieved Taylor Allen in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs and two runners aboard. Hollowell escaped the jam.
"Hollowell was lights out," said Post 11 coach Brad Reaves.
Charles B. Aycock's Eric DuBose started and worked four innings before being replaced by Southern Wayne's Michael Douglas. Allen appeared in relief of Douglas.
Nolan Lancaster smacked three hits, while Casey provided two. Cambric Moye homered and doubled. Jay Rose contributed one hit.
Wayne County (1-0 overall) is the guest of Benson on Saturday. First pitch is 7 p.m. on the South Johnston High School diamond.
