BARCO -- Cody Davis supplied a game-winning, seventh-inning single as Southern Wayne downed Currituck 1-0 in their first-round, N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A baseball game Friday evening.

The Saints (15-10 overall) visit South Central on Tuesday.

Michael Douglas scattered four hits in a complete-game effort. Backup catcher Joseph Otellio filled in for Jordan Williams, who missed the game due to an illness.

"Michael had very good command of his fastball and slider," said Southern Wayne head coach Trae McKee. "It was good to see him have a good, quality start again. He's been roughed up a couple of times in the last couple of outings. He got his confidence back and it just built throughout the game."

Otellio threw two runners out and blocked pitches well behind the plate.

"We made some unbelievable defensive plays," said McKee. "Tyler Edwards (shortstop) made some Sports Center-type plays and Ricky Oddon (center field) had a couple of great catches."

Southern Wayne stranded runners in scoring position in the second, fifth and sixth innings. The Knights, the Northeastern Coastal champions, avoided a bases-loaded jam in the fifth.

The Saints finally came through in the seventh.

Jordan Hood drew a walk and trotted home when Davis, who hadn't swung the stick in nearly two weeks, delivered the clinching hit.

"Cody got a pitch he could handle and hit a hard ground ball through the middle," said McKee.

Southern Wayne finished with four hits -- a double by first baseman Scott Holloman and singles from Hood, Davis and Matt Holmes.
