BUIES CREEK -- Wayne Christian advanced to today's Class 1-A Carolina Christian Conference softball tournament final with a 7-0 win over Crossroads Christian on Thursday afternoon.

Cynthia Burroughs and Traci Davis combined for the Eagles' second no-hitter in tournament play. Burroughs struck out nine and walked one. Davis added five strikeouts and walked one.

Carly Hightower, Reagan Hinton, Cynthia Burroughs and Sarah McCollum each batted 3-for-3.

The Eagles (14-2 overall) face nemesis Cape Fear Christian today at 5 p.m. at Campbell University.

Hwks earn top spot

LAGRANGE -- Regular-season co-champion North Lenoir earned the Eastern Plains Conference's No. 1 seed for the state playoffs with a 2-1 decision over Greene Central.

The Hawks (16-6 overall) and Rams tied for the EPC crown.

Kayla Sutton and Kristen Davenport (RBI) each had two hits and Kendal Letchworth added an RBI. Timon Jones and Kayla Letchworth pitched in hits.

Erin Dill earned the mound win.

Baseball

North Lenoir marches on

LaGRANGE -- If only they were all this easy.

North Lenoir breezed through the first round of the 2-A state playoffs with an 11-0 victory in five innings over Southern Vance on Thursday.

John Alphin tossed five scoreless innings for the Hawks (19-1 overall) and allowedg just two hits to go with six strikeouts and one walk.

Cory Johnson paced the North Lenoir offense, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. Stephen Pridgen (2 RBI), Mike Wetherington (RBI), Carter Capps (RBI) and Alphin (RBI) each contributed two hits.

Brandon Whitehurst and Dejuan Gray added hits.

Correction

In Thursday's edition of the News-Argus, it was incorrectly reported that Eastern Wayne had lost an opening-round, women's soccer playoff game four times since 2003.

The Warriors have lost just twice during that stretch.
