It took Lionel Sutton almost a decade to earn his first-ever Wayne County Men's Amateur Open Division trophy in 2007.
Now he's back to defend it.
A former mini tour player, Sutton will participate in the 2008 event, which tees off June 6 at picturesque Walnut Creek Country Club. Also attempting to defend titles will be three-time Senior Champion Bill Brewer and three-time Super Senior Champion John Newsome.
Brewer fashioned a three-day, tournament-record 8-under 206 a year ago. His nearest competitor finished 10 strokes back. Newsome sweated out the first two rounds, but ended with a 3-over 74 on the Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course links to claim his third consecutive crown.
"It is shaping up to be another wonderful tournament," said Parker King, one of the Amateur's organizers.
Round two is June 7 at Southern Wayne Country Club and the three-day event will conclude June 8 at Lane Tree Golf Course.
Sponsored by Andy Cheesesteaks and Cheeseburgers, the tournament is open to all men who are a resident of Wayne County or members -- in good standing -- with a golf club in the county.
Entry forms may be obtained from any golf course in the county and are due, along with the $100 entry fee, by May 23 at 2 p.m. The forms can be mailed or returned to the pro shop representative at GMGC.
For more information on the tournament, telephone King at 736-3434 or Jody Dean at 735-0411.
