The Wayne Christian girls soccer team showcased its deep, youth-laden roster during a 4-0 victory over Northwood Temple on Thursday afternoon.
"I thought we played very well today," said Eagles Daryl Anderson. "The girls showed a lot of intensity, and made some good plays in the offensive end."
The homestanding Eagles (6-8 overall) controlled the flow of play in the opening 10 minutes of the Class 1-A Carolina Christian Conference contest. Wayne Christian (3-2 CCC) earned its first scoring opportunity during that stretch, but came up empty when Devan Isenhower's free kick deflected off a wall of Northwood defenders and bounced harmlessly right of the net.
Wayne Christian finally scored in the 13th minute. Brooke Barfield gathered a loose ball in the 18-yard box and promptly buried it in the back of the net off Kaitlyn Kosuda's assist.
Anderson's team regrouped at halftime and responded with a three-goal outburst in the second 40 minutes of action.
Hanna Kaler tacked on the second goal off Kosuda's header in the 68th minute. Less than two minutes, Kosuda's added a goal. The sophomore gathered a crossing pass from Lana Martinez and shot it into the bottom left corner.
A tired Northwood team couldn't stop the momentum.
"I think we had them just about out of it right there," Anderson said. "They looked tired, and it gave me a chance to substitute more and play different combinations."
Anderson substituted for his only senior, Laura Lee Hodson, with eight minutes to go and the midfielder left to a standing ovation.
Courtney Howell tallied the final Wayne Christian score with 7:15 left on the clock. A fitting exclamation point to the one-sided game, Howell redirected a rebound into the net.
