WCDS baseball gets second CPIC win of 2008

Wayne Country Day School put together a complete team effort as they dropped visiting Greenfield 12-2 in a Class 1-A Coastal Plains Independent Conference contest Friday afternoon.

The Chargers (4-9 overall, 2-2 CPIC) played flawless defense and ripped the Knights' pitching staff for 14 hits. Kevin Herring emerged the offensive leader with three hits and four RBI.

Eighth-grader Hil Tanner contributed three hits. Amherst (Mass.) College signee Ryan Ford, Cameron Ford, Cameron Strickland, David Wilson and Corey Robert each added RBI hits.

Cameron Ford claimed the mound victory with four innings of work. Ryan Ford tossed the fifth.

Wayne Country Day entertains CPIC newcomer Oakwood on Tuesday.

Gators upend Bulldogs

SPRING CREEK -- Dontay Boseman batted 2-for-2 as Spring Creek shocked Princeton 5-4 on the Carolina 1-A Conference scene Friday evening.

Steven Best, Timmy Rogers and Anthony Brogden tallied two hits apiece for the Gators. Lee Coates reached base twice and provided an RBI.

The reigning N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A state champion, Princeton staged a furious late-game rally. Ryan Daughtry slugged a three-run homer off winning pitcher Alex Casey to pull the Bulldogs within one run.

Brogden replaced Casey and earned the save. A senior, Casey worked six-plus innings on the mound.

Spring Creek (7-12, 3-3 Carolina) visits Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday, while Princeton (7-9, 3-3) welcomes North Duplin.

Hawks win big

LAGRANGE -- Mike Wetherington tossed five scoreless innings and North Lenoir breezed past Farmville Central 11-0 in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference action Friday evening.

The Hawks (13-1 overall, 6-0 EPC) captured their 28th consecutive conference victory. They've won 81 of their last 90 contests overall.

Wetherington delivered two hits and three RBI offensively. Stephen Pridgen, John Alphin, C.C. Croom and Carter Capps each reached base twice and collected RBI.

North Lenoir visits Tarboro on Tuesday.

Rebels downed

KENLY -- Brad Rhodes threw a complete-game, four-hitter, but league-leading North Johnston manufactured a 5-1 victory in Carolina 1-A Conference play Friday evening.

Chase Deaver, Blake King, Taylor Coates and Trey Beavers cranked out one hit apiece for the Rebels.

North Duplin (3-9, 1-5 Carolina) travels to Princeton on Tuesday.

Rams defeated

SNOW HILL -- Six Greene Central players each recorded a hit against North Pitt on Friday evening, but the Rams dropped a 5-2 decision in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference action.

Justin Everett scattered eight hits in a complete-game effort for the Rams.

Greene Central (9-9 overall) invades Goldsboro on Tuesday.

Cougars fall

Donald Lewis collected Goldsboro's lone hit in a 17-0, five-inning loss to Eastern Plains 2-A rival Tarboro on Friday afternoon.

The Cougars fell to 0-12 overall and 0-6 in the EPC.

Softball

Rebels fall short

KENLY -- Elizabeth Lane ripped two doubles and reached base three times to lead the North Duplin offense, but North Johnston triumphed 7-6 in their Carolina 1-A Conference battle.

Defensive lapses allowed the Panthers to claim a 6-0 lead in the first inning.

"The girls didn't quit," said North Duplin head coach Heather Best. "They cleaned up their game, came alive at bat, and almost pulled it out. We hate to lose a game that we fought to get back in, but I am proud of the girls for not quitting and not giving up."

Jodie Williamson belted three hits for North Duplin. Kristen Jones, Jessica Pridgen and Ashley Cartwright each reached base twice.

Pridgen pitched a complete game and allowed seven runs (three earned runs) on four hits.

North Duplin (5-6 overall, 1-4 Carolina) goes to Princeton on Tuesday.

Saints cruise

DUDLEY -- Brianna Lofton ripped three hits as Southern Wayne defeated Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opponent Kinston 11-1 in five innings Friday night.

Lindsey Pearsall hit a home run and drove in three runs for the Saints. Alyssa Bradshaw, Lauren Darden and Tara Hirsch each had multiple RBIs for Southern Wayne.

Darden continued her dominant pitching streak, striking out 12 of the 16 batters she faced to earn the win in the circle.

Southern Wayne (13-2 overall, 7-0 ECC) travels to Wayne Christian for a non-conference showdown on Monday afternoon.

North Lenoir wins

FARMVILLE -- Kristen Davenport tallied three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs as North Lenoir topped Farmville Central 12-4.

The Hawks (11-4 overall) remained unbeaten in seven EPC contests this season.

Jessica Kennedy reached base twice and drove in three runs for the Hawks. Kayla Sutton also added two hits in the win.

Eagles shut out

Ayden-Grifton pounded out four extra-base hits and blanked Rosewood 8-0 in their Carolina 1-A Conference game Friday evening.

Cheyenne Utt, Casey Mathis, Amy Norris and Samantha Tripp collected two hits apiece for the Chargers.

Ayden-Grifton's Lindsey Smith recorded five strikeouts in the pitcher's circle.

Haile Meadows took the pitching loss for Rosewood, which dropped to 3-9 overall and 2-3 in the league.

Soccer

Warriors hold on

WILSON -- Janielle Daniel chipped a ball into the back of the net in the 36th minute and gave Eastern Wayne a lead it would never relinquish in a 3-2 decision over Wilson Beddingfield.

The Warriors (8-5 overall) improved to 6-2 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play.

Mary Catherine Hollowell and Crystal Lemmon each added goals for the Warriors.

Eastern Wayne outshot the Bruins 19-9 on the evening.

The Warriors entertain Charles B. Aycock on Tuesday. Kickoff is 7 p.m. on the Little Big Horn pitch.

Chargers triumph

Wayne Country Day rebounded from its shutout loss on Thursday with a 6-1 rout of Oakwood on Friday afternoon.

The Chargers (9-2-2 overall) remained perfect in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play at 5-0-1.

Scoring details were not available at press time.

Wayne Country Day is the guest of Greenfield on Tuesday.

Golf

Barrow leads EW

Nick Barrow seized medalist honors with a 72 as Eastern Wayne defeated South Central 309-343 on the Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course links.

Eric Huetter complemented Barrow with an 18-hole round of 76. Kyle Ham contributed 77, while Ryan Lake fired an 84.

The Warriors return to action Monday at Lane Tree.

JV sports

* Eastern Wayne girls soccer 1, C.B. Aycock 0 -- Joann Talton scored the game's lone goal for the Warriors. Tiffany Toy and Sydney Potter split time at keeper, and recorded seven total saves. Eastern Wayne improved to 4-2-4 overall and concludes regular-season play next Tuesday at Aycock.

* Greene Central baseball 12, North Pitt 1 -- Wes Sowers pitched all five innings of the mercy-rule shortened game. Sowers added two hits and three RBI to the Greene Central offense. Kyle McGlahorn and Josh Taylor each had two hits in the win. Greene Central improved to 11-5 overall.

* Eastern Wayne tennis 9, Southern Wayne 0 -- Timothy Parker, Joe Dicasare, Sanjeev Srikantha, Scott Cronin, Seth Taylor and Kevin Carpenter each picked up singles points for the Warriors. The tandems of Dicasare-Parker, Carpenter-Srikantha and Taylor-Cronin collected the doubles points. The Warriors rose to 5-2 overall.

Middle schools

* Eastern Wayne baseball 28, Dillard 2 -- M.J. Morgan (five RBI) singled, doubled and homered for the Warriors. Ryan Mitchell batted 2-for-2 with a double, while Josh Dixon contributed three hits in three at-bats. Cole Newsome (2-for-2) and Justin Lee (3-for-4) also had a good day at the plate. Lee and Nolan James combined for the pitching win. Eastern Wayne improved to 9-1 overall.
