Eastern Wayne cranks 5 homers against Bruins

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne slugged a season-high five home runs and pounded out 18 hits in an offensive-filled, 17-9 victory over Wilson Beddingfield on Friday evening.

The Warriors (15-5 overall) remained tied atop the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference standings with archrival Charles B. Aycock at 7-1. The teams meet Tuesday in New Hope to decide who gets a share of the regular-season championship.

First pitch is 7 p.m.

Shortstop Walker Gourley smacked a lead-off homer and set the tempo for the Warriors, who have ripped 28 round-trippers this season. John Wooten (six RBI) smashed two homers. Catcher Cambric Moye (2-for-4, RBI) and first baseman Tyler Wicks (1-for-5) also knocked the ball out of the Bruins' park.

Moye has 13 RBI in his last four outings.

"I think this shows just how hard these guys have been working," said Eastern Wayne head coach Jabo Fulghum. "We have been hitting the ball really well lately, and that's a reflection of the team's practice habits. It seems like everyone is locked in right now at the plate.

"The guys are getting into the zone."

Eight Warriors collected one or more hits in their regular-season sweep of the Bruins, who remained winless in eight league outings this spring. Adron Hollowell (2-for-4, two RBI), Nolan Lancaster (3-for-5, double), Michael Mintz (1-for-3, RBI) and Jeff Hill (1-for-3, RBI) also contributed to the win.

Hollowell threw six-plus innings for the mound win.

Eastern Wayne rolled to an 11-1 lead through four innings, but was bitten by mistakes which allowed Beddingfield (1-16) to climb back into the contest.

"It was a long night, but it was good to get the at-bats," said Fulghum. "In the fourth we walked a couple and we hit a batter, and that allowed them to score some runs and get back in it."
