KENLY -- Ashley Braswell's single up the middle in the top of the 12th inning drove home Hannah Wood and lifted Princeton to a 1-0 Carolina 1-A Conference victory at North Johnston on Tuesday.
Braswell and Wood both finished with two hits. Brittany Baker and Jessica Smith each added hits.
Princeton starting pitcher April Keene worked nine scoreless innings allowing just two hits with nine strikeouts and no walks. Traci Bridgers tossed the final three innings surrendering one hit while striking out three and walking one.
The Bulldogs (5-4, 2-0 CC) host conference opponent Ayden-Grifton today.
CBA topples Fike
WILSON -- Nine different Golden Falcons tallied at least one hit as Charles B. Aycock defeated Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Wilson Fike 8-2 on Tuesday evening.
Autumn Pittman (3 RBI), Brittany Ford, Leigh Smith and Anna Sullivan each had two hits.
Pittman got the start on the mound allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with no walks and five strikeouts in five innings. Emily Jordan pitched two scoreless innings of relief.
The Golden Falcons (12-2 overall) host Greene Central at 5 p.m. today.
NL soars past N. Pitt
BETHEL -- North Lenoir cruised past North Pitt 13-0 in five innings in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference action on Tuesday.
Connor Jordan went 3-for-4 with four RBI and Kendall Letchworth was 2-for-4. Amber Best and Kayla Letchworth both added hits.
Jordan earned the win on the mound allowing two hits to go with six strikeouts and one walk.
The Hawks (7-4 overall, 3-0 EPC) visit Eastern Wayne at 5 p.m. today.
Baseball
Jags top Cougars
Farmville Central erupted for eight, third-inning runs and cruised past Goldsboro 12-2 in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play Tuesday.
Alex Aldridge and Needham Core each had one hit for the Cougars. Defensive standouts were Josh McCoy, Donald Lewis and Darren Pittman.
Goldsboro (0-8, 0-3 EPC) is scheduled to entertain Cary Academy on Thursday.
WCS wins big
DUNN -- Wayne Christian School's three-year Carolina Christian 1-A Conference unbeaten streak is alive and well after Tuesday's 13-0 drubbing of Cape Fear Christian.
Adam Brannan pitched all seven innings scattering four hits with 11 strikeouts and no walks.
Kyle Harrell paced the Eagles offense with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate. Travis Thomas had three hits and three RBI. Brannan, Michael Johnson and Dante' Arthur each pitched in two hits.
Wayne Christian (5-1 overall, 2-0 CCC) visits non-conference rival Wayne Country Day on Saturday.
Chargers stumble
Wayne Country Day's struggles continued on Tuesday with an 18-4 loss in five innings to Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference foe Faith Christian of Rocky Mount.
Cameron Strickland went 1-for-2 with a two-run homer and Kevin Herring had a double and two RBI.
The Chargers (2-8 overall, 1-1 CPIC) visit Ridgecroft today.
Hawks still unbeaten
LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir remained undefeated with a 12-2 victory over North Pitt on Tuesday.
John Alphin led the Hawks at the plate going 3-for-4 with a three-run home run and three runs scored. Brandon Whitehurst finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored, Tyler Potter was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and Cory Johnson was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Alphin got the win on the mound allowing two runs on two hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.
North Lenoir (10-0 overall, 3-0 EPC) hosts Eastern Wayne today.
AGHS halts Rebels
AYDEN -- Ayden-Grifton jumped out to a 3-0 lead and went on to down North Duplin 6-1 on Tuesday.
Doug Lloyd took the loss for the Rebels allowing three runs (all earned) on six hits with six strikeouts and three walks over six innings.
North Duplin (2-7, 0-3 CC) hosts Rosewood on Friday.
Tarboro herds Rams
SNOW HILL -- Offense was hard to come by for Greene Central on Tuesday as the Rams fell 8-2 to Eastern Plains 2-A Conference opponent Tarboro.
Trey Beaman went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Greene Central. Mike Speedy took the loss allowing five runs (none earned) on four hits with three walks in 3 2/3 innings.
The Rams (8-6 overall, 1-2 EPC) will step out of conference and host Charles B. Aycock at 7 p.m. today.
Golf
Fike outshoots CBA
Ryan Yarborough earned medalist honors in leading Wilson Fike to an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference win over Charles B. Aycock on Tuesday.
Yarborough fired a 73 as Fike finished with a team scored of 299 to Aycock's 324.
Austin Forrest led the Golden Falcons with a round of 74. Hayward Jeffries shot an 82, Blane Stafford recorded an 83 and Charlie Cranford had an 84.
Aycock returns to action on Monday at Kinston.
Eagles earn win
BUIES CREEK -- Wayne Christian bested six Carolina Christian 1-A Conference foes at Keith Hills Country Club with a team score of 155 on Tuesday.
Cape Fear Christian finished second with a 164 and Trinity tallied a 165.
Matt Davis earned medalist honors for the Eagles with a round of 36. Taylor Gardner carded a 38 followed by Hayden Gardner's 39. Andrew Radford and Eric Williams both shot 42.
Wayne Christian will travel to Treyburn Country Club in Durham on Monday to compete in the North Carolina High School Invitational against last years public and private school team and individual state champions.
Walnut Creek LGA
Novella Zambellie was the play-of-the-day winner during weekly tournament play at Walnut Creek Country Club.
Evelyn Rose recorded loss gross. Pete Reaves earned low net and Faye Franklin was the low putts winner.
Lane Tree LGA
Betty Jean Gurley claimed game-of-the-week and low putts during weekly tournament play at Lane Tree Golf Course.
Nan Jarrell took low net.
Soccer
WCDS start strong
Three goals in the first 24 minutes was all the cushion Wayne Country Day needed en route to a 6-2 victory over visiting Hobgood on Tuesday.
Virginia Best scored three goals and Brooke Norris added a pair. Eighth graded Mack Thompson's second half goal completed the Chargers scoring.
Wayne Country Day finished with a 32-3 advantage in shots.
The Chargers host Rosewood today at 4 p.m. The two teams played to a scoreless tie earlier this season.
Tennis
EW aces Kinston
Eastern Wayne lost just four games all afternoon and cruised to a 9-0 Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference win over visiting Kinston on Tuesday.
Drew Jackson, David Benton, Chris Knobling, Eric Barnes, Thomas Jackson and Will Kastner all earned singles wins for the Warriors.
The doubles tandems of Jackson-Benton, Knobling-Barnes, and Jackson-Kastner picked up doubles victories.
Rams net FC
SNOW HILL -- Greene Central had little trouble downing Eastern Plains 2-A Conference opponent Farmville Central 9-0 on Tuesday.
Eric Simmons, James Kersey, Trey Cash, Colby Chase, Andrew Harrison and Jason Perry each recorded singles wins.
The doubles teams of Simmons-Cash, Kersey-Perry and Harrison-Chase were all victorious.
"Today was another good performance," Rams head coach Brad Sauls said. "I am so pleased to see how consistently we are playing in our singles matches and how aggressively we are playing in our doubles."
Greene Central (8-3, 3-1 EPC) visits Southern Nash today.
Eagles drop opener
Rosewood dropped its season-opening match to Ayden-Grifton 9-0 on Tuesday.
Eric Sjoerdsna, A.J. Lewis, Peter Ramirez, Henry Dearcia, Dustin Doughtry and Adam Bouldin each competed in singles play for the Eagles.
Rosewood (0-1 overall) visits Farmville Central today.
Track
Warriors sweep tri-meet
SNOW HILL -- Eastern Wayne's girls track team swept a non-conference tri-meet with Greene Central and South Lenoir on Tuesday.
The Warriors finished with a team score of 82 ahead of Greene Central's 68 and South Lenoir's 19.
First-place finishers for Eastern Wayne were Noelle Kelly (200, 400 meters), Kelly Gregorck (two-mile) and Esther Sutton (300 meter hurdles). Kelly has now qualified for regional competition in both the 400 and 200 meters as well as the 1, 600-, 800- and 400-meter relays.
The Warriors swept the relays.
JV sports
* Eastern Wayne girls soccer 2, Princeton 0 - Grace Russo found the back of the net twice for the Warriors. Goalkeeper Tiffany Toy anchored the Warrior defense with nine saves in the shutout. Eastern Wayne (3-0-4 overall) travels to Jacksonville White Oak on Thursday.
