Sherrer named Conference Carolinas player of the week

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive catcher Jason Sherrer has been named the Conference Carolinas baseball player of the week for the third time this season.

Sherrer delivered a career-best, five-hit effort in the Trojans' first game against Coker (S.C.) College on Saturday. He missed hitting for the cycle with one triple, two doubles and two series. On Sunday, Sherrer ignited an eight-run, third-inning outburst with a two-run homer.

Sherrer's game-tying home run forced extra innings in Mount Olive's 3-2, 10-inning victory over No. 28-ranked Catawba.

For the week, Sherrer batted 10-for-16 (.625) with two home runs and 10 RBI.

Skirptas takes 3rd

WINGATE -- Pete Skirptas ended up third overall out of 45 golfers at the Ralph Hargett Memorial Invitational.

Skirptas fired a 2-over par 74 on Tuesday and finished with a 36-hole total of 151. His second-round score tied for the third-lowest, 18-hole total of the tournament.

Skirptas earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

Teammate Johan Hagsund tied for seventh with a 155. Jonathan Greene (157) tied for 12th, while Mick Moberg (160) tied for 22nd. Former Charles B. Aycock standout Ryan Campbell fashioned a 164.

Mount Olive placed second overall in the nine-team field with a 623.

Moberg ends up 22nd

WINGATE -- Kristin Moberg finished tied for 22nd overall and Mount Olive recorded a ninth-place performance during the women's portion of the Ralph Hargett Memorial Invitational.

Moberg notched a 36-hole score of 178. Kristen Freeman (181), Deborah Woodrum (191) and Brooke Newell (193) contributed to the Trojans' team score of 747.

Lindsay Becker also participated.

Trojans swept

MOUNT OLIVE -- Pfeiffer erupted for four seventh-inning runs and turned back Mount Olive 4-3 in game one of their Conference Carolinas doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.

The Falcons claimed the nightcap 3-0.

The Trojans (20-15 overall) fell to 6-4 in conference play heading into Thursday's non-conference doubleheader against No. 6-ranked Francis Marion. First pitch is 4 p.m. on the Nancy Chapman Cassell Field diamond.

Mount Olive pitcher Anna Turvin (7-8) retired 11 consecutive batters after giving up a single to begin the game. Turvin allowed only three hits in six scoreless innings before running into trouble in the seventh.

Dacia Ijames, who tossed a six-hitter on the mound for Pfeiffer, led off the top of the seventh with a double. Sarah Moore drew a one-out walk and Shelby Fleming singled home the first run. Stephanie Brandt tied the game with an opposite-field two-run triple to right-center and scored the game-winner on Tiffany Allen's single up the middle.

Ijames (11-9), who retired the first seven batters she faced, set the Trojans down in order in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

Pfeiffer took a quick 1-0 lead in the nightcap as Martina Bullard hit a one-out triple and scored on Jaimee Cassidy's single. Trojan pitcher Jenny Jackson (13-7) held the Falcons without another hit over the next four innings.

Mount Olive missed scoring chances in the fourth and seventh inning. A strikeout and double-play grounder left the bases loaded in the fourth. A flyout and infield grounder ended the seventh-inning threat.
