Crystal Lemmon collected two goals as the Eastern Wayne women's soccer team cruised past Kinston 5-0 on a soggy Little Big Horn pitch Tuesday evening.

The Warriors (5-3 overall) improved to 4-1 against Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opposition. The Vikings, directed by head coach Joe Romig, departed 1-8-1 in all games and 1-4 in the ECC.

Lemmon notched the game-winner in the fifth minute off an assist from sophomore Emily Sparks. The senior collected her second goal off Brandi Dean's assist in the 50th minute.

Mary Catherine Hollowell found the net in the 33rd minute. Kelsey Griffith (45th) and Dean (64th) also scored. Senior Brittany Spence assisted on Dean's mark.

Sophomore keeper Danielle Daniel recorded two saves and earned the shutout in goal.

Eastern Wayne begins second-half ECC play at home Friday against Southern Wayne.

Softball

Hawks edge FC

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir opened Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play with a 2-0 victory over visiting Farmville Central on Tuesday.

Connor Jordan struck out eight, allowed three hits and walked two for the Hawks.

Nicole Howard was 2-for-3. Brittany Barrow, Kristen Davenport, Timon Jones, Jessica Kennedy and Kendal Letchworth all had hits.

North Lenoir (5-4 overall, 1-0 EPC) hosts EPC opponent Tarboro at 7 p.m. on Friday.

GHS suffers road loss

TARBORO -- Goldsboro's quest for its first win of the season came up empty in its Eastern Plains 2-A Conference opener.

The Cougars (0-4, 0-1 EPC) fell 17-1 at Tarboro on Tuesday.

Anecia Murray scored Goldsboro's lone run in the fifth inning.

The Cougars entertain Greene Central on Friday.

Baseball

Panthers stalk Rebels

CALYPSO -- Behind an eight-run first inning, North Johnston routed North Duplin 14-4 in six innings in Carolina 1-A Conference play on Tuesday.

Billy Mello, Doug Lloyd and Brad Rhodes each had hits for the Rebels. Lloyd took the loss on the mound.

North Duplin (2-5 overall, 0-1 CC) visits Princeton on Friday.

Tennis

Warriors down Bruins

Eastern Wayne picked up a 7-2, Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference victory over Wilson Beddingfield on Tuesday.

David Benton, Chris Knobling, Eric Barnes and Thomas Jackson were all singles winners for the Warriors. The doubles tandems of Drew Jackson-Benton, Knobling-Barnes and Thomas Jackson-Charlie Umstead were also victorious.

Eastern Wayne entertains No. 1-ranked and unbeaten Southern Nash today.

Golf

Walnut Creek LGA

Nancy Satterfield emerged play-of-the-day winner for weekly tournament play at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Kathy Woodard took low gross. Mary Ann Sutton and Linda Cannon seized low net and low putts, respectively.

CBA roughs up Saints

PIKEVILLE -- Six different Golden Falcons found the back of the net as Charles B. Aycock defeated Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opponent Southern Wayne 7-2 on Tuesday night.

Taylor DeMartini had a pair of goals and an assist for the Golden Falcons, who jumped out to a 4-1 lead at halftime.

Abby Caplinger, Caroline Schaleppi, Jessica Price, Lauren Adcox and Brittany Thompson each added goals for Aycock.

The Golden Falcons (3-5, 2-3 ECC) host Princeton at 7 p.m. today.

Basketball

Billups recognized

Eastern Wayne senior Brittani Billups has been selected the N.C. Basketball Coaches Association District III player of the year.

A Longwood (Va.) University signee, Billups averaged nearly 25 points and 15 rebounds in leading the Warriors to 23 victories and an appearance in the Class 3-A sectional finals. The 6-foot forward earned All-Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference honors for the second consecutive season as Eastern Wayne posted a program-best 23 wins with head coach Brent Holland.

The inaugural All-District team, comprised of players from Nash, Edgecombe, Wilson, Wayne and Pitt Counties, were voted upon by coaches who are NCBCA members.

Billups repeated as the News-Argus All-Area Player of the Year.

Eagles honored

Wayne Christian recently honored its winter sports athletes with a season-ending awards ceremony.

The winners were:

* Varsity boys basketball: Bradley Yelverton (most improved); Matthew Davis, Adam Brannan (coach's award); Ryan Clarke (Christian leadership) and Eric Williams (MVP).

* Varsity girls basketball: Kaitlyn Kosuda (most improved); Hanna Kaler, Jennifer Price (coach's award); Logan Dawson (Christian leadership) and Hope Wright, Brittany Sullivan (co-MVPs).

* JV boys basketball: Anthony Mulligan (most improved); Jordan Crouthamel (coach's award); John Norris (Christian leadership) and Greg Alexander (MVP).

* JV girls basketball: Devan Isenhower (most improved); Kayla Kennedy, Carly Hightower (coach's award); Summer Brathwaite (Christian leadership) and Charity Wright (MVP).

* Middle school boys basketball: Chandler Harrell, Chase Darden (most improved); Jacob Anderson (coach's award); Kyle Sasser (Christian leadership) and Josiah Davis (MVP).

* Middle school girls basketball: Meredith Burroughs (most improved); Niki Fitzmorris (coach's award); Jordan Calvert, Brittney Kornegay (Christian leadership) and Brooke Barfield (MVP).

* JV cheerleading: Maggey Taylor (most improved); Anna Pierce (coach's award); Katie Johnson (Christian leadership) and Anna Pierce (MVP).

* Varsity cheerleading: Amee Little (most improved); Allison Rose (coach's award); Courtney Albritton (Christian leadership) and Katie Daniels, Katie Strickland (co-MVPs).

Statisticians Michelle Krug, Laura Lee Hodson, Al King, Tiffany Price and Kyle Harrell also received awards.

JV sports

* Spring Creek softball 8, Southern Wayne 7 -- Rene Duval drove home Stacey Lane for game-winning run as Gators snapped seven-game skid. Kristin Smith batted 4-for-4 and scored twice. Pitchers Elizabeth Edwards and Casey Coor combined for three strikeouts.

Middle schools

* Spring Creek softball 16, Brogden 1 -- Ashley Parks cranked out three hits and scored three runs for the Gators. Katlyn Casey, Janna Price, Bell Wood, Dorothy Brooks and Jordan Cook also contributed to the win.

* Grantham softball 10, Mount Olive 0 -- Madison Davis tossed a no-hitter and struck out 11 in four innings of work. Davis also was 2-for-2 at the plate with three runs scored and Hope Davis went 2-for-3. Granthan (5-2, 2-0) visits Greenwood on April 10.

* Spring Creek baseball 11, Brogden 0 -- Hunter Barnett tossed a no-hitter in five innings and Corey Howell went 3-for-3 for Spring Creek. Adam Haggerty added a pair of hits. Spring Creek hosts Dillard on Thursday.
