HOBGOOD -- Despite soggy conditions, the Wayne Country Day women's soccer team sloshed past Hobgood Academy 5-0 on Monday afternoon.

Eighth-grader Mack Thompson tallied two goals in the 1st and 41st minutes for the Chargers, who improved to 4-1-1 overall this season.

"Overall, this was quite a morality boost for the girls after our disappointing showing Saturday in Wilson," said WCDS head coach Baron Heinemann. "They pulled together and played team soccer. The girls showed confidence with the ball and great tenacity against a physical, and often-quick Hobgood team."

Junior forward Virginia Best collected two goals off assists from eighth-grader Catherine Ford and senior forward Katie Hampton. Midfielder Brooke Norris converted a cross from Ford in the 60th minute.

Wayne Country Day posted its fifth shutout of the season and keeper Ellen Elmore, who missed Saturday's game, stopped Hobgood's lone chance on goal.

The Chargers entertain perennial power and Coastal Plains Independent 1-A rival Greenfield on Wednesday. Kickoff is 4:45 p.m.

Eagles grounded

Community Christian scored two first-half goals, including a penalty kick, and turned back Wayne Christian 2-0 in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play Monday afternoon.

The Eagles (1-1 CCC) visit Greenville on Thursday.

Softball

Another no-hitter

Pitchers Traci Davis and Cynthia Burroughs combined for a three-inning, no-hitter as No. 1-ranked Wayne Christian thumped Community Christian 20-0 on Monday afternoon.

Davis retired five of eight batters on strikeouts, while Burroughs struck out all three hitters she faced.

The Eagles (6-0 overall, 1-0 CCC) pounded out 14 hits, and scored 10 runs each in the first and second innings. Davis, Kayla Kennedy and Reagan Hinton each slugged an extra-base hit.

Weather permitting, Wayne Christian visits Faith Christian-Rocky Mount today. First pitch is 4:30 p.m. The Eagles are the reigning N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A champions.

Baseball

Faith now 7-1

HOOKERTON -- Faith Christian remained unbeaten on the N.C. Christian Schools Association Ccastal Region 2-A baseball scene with a 7-4 victory over Mt. Calvary.

John-Kurt Cozine pitched a complete game to earn the win on the mound. Cozine struck out nine Warrior batters.

Silas Denslinger led the Faith offense with a perfect 3-3 effort. Jay Hinson reached base four times and scored twice for the Conquerors.

Faith Christian (7-1 overall) is 7-0 in NCCSA play.
