C.B. Aycock softball goes 1-2 at Harnett Central Invitational

ANGIER -- The Charles B. Aycock softball team compiled a 1-2 record during the single-day Harnett Central Invitational contested Friday.

The Golden Falcons opened tournament play with a 1-0, eight-inning loss to Triton. Perennial Class 3-A power Harnett Central downed Aycock 10-0 in the second game, but the Golden Falcons rebounded with a 9-6 decision over Midway.

Against Triton, pitcher Autumn Pittman scattered eight hits and posted eight strikeouts, but permitted an unearned run. Leigh Smith led the Golden Falcon offense with two hits, while Torie Benton batted 1-for-4.

Triton pitcher Candace Faircloth notched 13 strikeouts.

In the second game, Harnett Central erupted for seven first-inning runs and handed the Golden Falcons their second defeat in regular-season play. Smith, Pittman and Shamyka Polite contributed one hit apiece.

Aycock (9-2 overall) pounded out 14 hits in their third contest.

Brittany Ford, Cara Frederick and Benton (four RBI) cranked out three hits apiece. Smith added two hits and an RBI. Edgerton, Jessica Hare and Randi Tucker (RBI) each registered one hit.

Pittman went the distance on the mound.

Hawks rout NJ

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir tuned up for its Eastern Plains 2-A Conference schedule with a 12-4 victory over perennial 1-A power North Johnston.

Courtney Hill, Jessica Kennedy and Nicole Howard each had two hits for the Hawks. Connor Jordan picked up the win on the mound giving up five hits, striking out seven and walking five.

North Lenoir (4-4 overall) begins defense of its EPC regular-season championship at home Tuesday against Farmville Central.

Soccer

Chargers upended

WILSON -- Freshman Rikki Bizzell collected two goals within an eight-minute span as Wilson Christian stopped Wayne Country Day 3-1 during The Brittany IV contested at the Gillette Soccer Complex.

The Chargers (3-1-1 overall) suffered their first loss of the season and the defense allowed its first goal in 320-plus minutes.

Virginia Best accounted for Wayne Country Day's lone goal.

Hannah Renfrow tallied Wilson Christian's final goal and helped the N.C. Christian Schools Association 3-A member to complete a 3-for-3 performance in shots on goal.

Taylor Moore and Morgan Lewis combined for 13 saves against the Chargers, of the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A ranks. The Chargers' Mack Thompson earned a sportsmanship award for the game.

Wayne Country Day visits Hobgood on Monday.

Lane Tree LGA

Theresa Merritt claimed top honors for play-of-the-week during weekly tournament play at Lane Tree Golf Course.

Linda Hilburn took low net, while Linda Watson captured low putts.
