Warriors rout Wake County HS

GREENVILLE -- Different day, different opponent.

Same ballpark, same story.

For the second time in less than 24 hours, Eastern Wayne used solid hitting and pitching to earn a victory in the annual Jimmie R. Grimsley Hot Stove League Invitational at Guy Smith Stadium.

The Warriors needed just five innings to rough up Wake County Home School 14-3 on Tuesday afternoon.

Wake County got to Warriors right-hander Adron Hollowell for three unearned runs in the top of the first on a pair of errors, a walk and a single. However, the sophomore permitted just three hits and posted four strikeouts in the final four innings.

"We kicked it around in that first inning," Eastern Wayne head coach Jabo Fulghum said. "Adron threw the ball well we just had two plays where we gave away some runs."

The Warriors bounced back with four runs in the home half of the first.

John Wooten, Michael Mintz and Hollowell each provided run-scoring hits. Mintz later scored on Colton Fulghum's bases-loaded walk.

Cambric Moye delivered the first of his two home runs, a two-run shot to left center field, in the bottom of the second inning. Moye struck again in the fourth with a towering three-run blast to center field. He finished 2-for-2 with five RBI, three runs scored and walked twice.

Mintz's two-run double in the fifth and Steven Hall's three-run homer completed Eastern Wayne's 15-hit assault. Wooten ended the day 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Mintz collected three hits, three RBI and scored twice in three at-bats.

Nolan Lancaster and Hollowell each tallied two hits.

"We had a good offensive punch up and down the lineup. Moye really had a good day at the plate," said Fulghum. "We gained a lot of confidence. We know if we play sound defense we're going to be tough to contend with."

The Warriors (8-5) also received a bit of good news. Junior shortstop Walker Gourley strained a medial colateral ligament (MCL) against Washington and could return to the lineup next week.

"Walker's going to be fine," Fulghum said. "He got a good diagnosis. Nothing showed that it was anything to be concerned with and we're lucky for that."

Eastern Wayne resumes its Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference schedule at home April 1 against Kinston.
