DUDLEY -- Brianna Lofton and Lindsay Pearsall each batted 3-for-4 as Southern Wayne knocked off Greene Central 4-1 on Monday afternoon.

Right-handed hurler Lauren Darden scattered three hits and posted 12 strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

Southern Wayne (4-1 overall) entertains county rival Eastern Wayne today. It is the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener for both teams.

Hawks grounded

NEW BERN -- Havelock hung on for a 4-3, non-conference victory over North Lenoir on Monday afternoon.

Kendall Letross led the Hawks with a triple and three RBI.

Pitcher Connor Jordan, in a losing effort, recorded 10 strikeouts and allowed six hits for the Hawks.

North Lenoir fell to 1-3 overall.

Jones Senior tops GHS

TRENTON -- Despite dropping a 22-10 decision to Jones Senior, first-year Goldsboro coach T.J. Lancaster is pleased with his team's progress.

"I was very pleased overall with how we played tonight," said Lancaster. "I liked how we bounced back in the fourth inning after a rough third, and I think the effort says a lot about what we are trying to do as a program."

Dominique Sauls batted 1-for-2 and scored twice, as did Martinique Thomas.

Goldsboro (0-3 overall) returns to action Apr. 1 at Eastern Plains 2-A rival Tarboro.

Soccer

NL wins big

SEVEN SPRING -- Sasha Holeman, Lindsay Fulton and Sara Farmer each scored two goals as North Lenoir tallied an 8-0 victory over Spring Creek.

Jordan Hudson and Ashley Stalnaker scored one goal apiece for the Hawks.

Ra'nelle Dudley and Aime Heath combined for the shutout in goal.

North Lenoir improved to 4-1 overall.

Tennis

Rams shut out

State-ranked Southern Nash handed Greene Central a 9-0 loss Monday afternoon.

"Southern Nash is an outstanding team, and they just completely out-played us today," Ram coach Brad Sauls said. "We played some solid sets, but we were not able to maintain a high level of play throught. Hopefully we'll compete better next time."

Andrew Harrison and Trey Cash each dropped hard-fought decisions in singles play. Harrison losing his first set on a tiebreaker.

Greene Central (3-1 overall) plays Topsail today.

Aycock beats Greenfield

Blake Vail and Ben Nichols each posted shutout wins in singles play as Charles B. Aycock bested perennial independent schools power Greenfield 9-0.

Ben Evans, along with Nichols posted an 8-0 win in doubles.

The No. 8-ranked Falcons (3-0 overall) play Southern Nash today.

Baseball

Cougars fall

TRENTON -- Jones Senior erupted for 11 first-inning runs in a 14-1, non-conference victory over Goldsboro on Monday afternoon.

Officials shortened the game to 41/2 innings due to the 10-run rule.

Darren Pittman tripled and accounted for the Cougars' lone run. Teammates Josh McCoy and Marquise Dance each provided a single.

Assistant coach Danny Merritt said center fielder Donald Lewis and third baseman Keith Jackson played well on defense.

Goldsboro (0-1 overall) entertains Jones Senior on Friday.

JV sports

* Wayne Christian softball 13, Fayetteville Christian 3 -- Kayla Kennedy and Meredith Burroughs combined to throw a no-hitter and allowed just two base runners in the Eagles' season-opening game. Carly Hightower batted 2-for-2 with a home run. Cynthia Burroughs and Courtney Albriton each went 3-4.

Middle schools

* Eastern Wayne softball 24, Brogden 0 -- Haley Ginn belted four hits on the day, including a grand-slam, as Eastern Wayne topped Brogden. Stephanie Smith and Jessica Ream added two hits each in the win. The Warriors improve to 3-0, and will take on Spring Creek, Monday.

* Eastern Wayne baseball 14, Brogden 2 -- Wes Capps went 2-2 at the plate and knocked in a pair of runs as the Warriors improved to 3-0 on the season. Zack Mozingo and Wes Stewart each finished with 3 RBI to lead Eastern Wayne. The Warriors will be back in action Monday when they host Spring Creek.
