Eastern Wayne rebounded from Monday's lackadaisical performance against Spring Creek and turned back South Central 9-3 on the New Hope diamond Wednesday afternoon.

Walker Gourley emerged the winning pitcher and slapped a two-run homer.

"Walker pitched a very good game, and we played a lot better defense behind him," head coach Jabo Fulghum said.

Cambric Moye added a home run for the Warriors, who evened their worksheet at 2-2 overall.

G. Central drops Kinston

Jasper Jones threw a shutout as Greene Central topped Kinston 10-0 in a 41/2-inning, non-conference contest Wednesday.

Alex Brann led the Rams with two hits, including an RBI double. Chris Leggett reached base twice and added an RBI.

Falcons falter

LaGRANGE -- Charles B. Aycock slipped from the unbeaten ranks with a 7-3, non-conference setback against North Lenoir.

Hawks pitcher Mike Wetherington limited the Golden Falcons to three hits in five-plus innings.

Steven Pridgen pounded out two hits, while John Alphin and Tyler Potter each delivered a home run.

Zach Wright led the Golden Falcons with two hits.

Gators get second win

NEWTON GROVE -- Steven Best reached base three times and scored three runs as Spring Creek throttled Hobbton 15-3 on Wednesday afternoon.

Tim Rogers also had a stellar night at the plate with two hits and three RBI.

Anthony Brogden pitched three strong innings, allowing just one run on three hits to get the win.

Spring Creek plays host to South Lenoir today.

Softball

Aycock holds on

Charles B. Aycock survived a seventh-inning rally to defeat North Johnston 8-4, Wednesday.

Plating eight runs in their first three at-bats, the Falcons would use strong defense to stop a four-run seventh by the Rams.

Leigh Smith led the Falcons at the plate, going 3-4, while Torie Benton, Anna Sullivan and Ashley Singleton all notched two hits.

Aycock moves to 3-0 on the season.

Saints top South Lenoir

DEEP RUN -- Lauren Darden threw a three-hit shutout as Southern Wayne blanked South Lenoir 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon.

Darden finished with a complete game.

Jordan Hill paced the Saints with the game-winning, two-RBI single which scored Meredith and Morgan Davis.

Southern Wayne (2-1 overall) entertains Rosewood today.

Warriors beat Goldsboro

Eastern Wayne's potent offense proved to much for Goldsboro to handle, as the Warriors won 41/2-inning, non-conference game Wednesday afternoon.

Individual statistics for the Warriors (3-2 overall) were not available.

Goldsboro (0-2) visits Jones Senior on Friday.

Tennis

Rams beat East Duplin

Fourth-seeded Colby Chase captured a come-from-behind victory and Greene Central had little trouble in an 8-1, non-conference conquest of East Duplin.

Chase and doubles partner Trey Cash triumphed at No. 2 doubles.

"Colby had to play two tiebreaks today, and I was pleased with how he handled himself in those situations," Rams coach Brad Sauls said.

Greene Central (3-0 overall) will take on state-ranked Southern Nash on Monday.

Soccer

CBA thorned by Rose

GREENVILLE -- Taylor DeMartini scored her first career goal, but it was not enough to keep the Falcons from dropping a hard-fought 2-1 decision at J.H. Rose.

Aycock (0-2 overall) entertains South Central on Friday.

JV sports

* Greene Central baseball 10, Kinston 0 -- Deric Grant ptched six shutout innings as Greene Central improved to 2-0 on the season. Wes Sowers delivered a pair of doubles, and notched an RBI for the Rams. Will Crandle aslo had a double and an RBI.

* C.B. Aycock baseball 6, North Lenoir 2 -- Aaron Champion threw five strong innings and combined with reliever Jeff Carmel to shut down North Lenoir. Carmel was also the Falcons' offensive leader, belting a double and scoring three times. Jordan Quin went 1-for-1 on the night.
