PIKEVILLE -- For a while Charles B. Aycock's chances of opening its 2008 season with a victory looked slim.

The Golden Falcons trailed visiting Wilson Fike 5-1 after three innings before rallying for a 12-6 win on Thursday afternoon.

Will Edgerton went 2 for 3 with a double, Conner Narron added a double and an RBI, and Zach Wright was 1 for 3 with a pair of RBI.

Jordan Carr tacked on a triple and three RBI. John Taylor drove in a pair of runs, while Tyler Ruffin and Stephen Strouse both had doubles for Aycock.

Jesse Randolph got the win on the mound for the Golden Falcons, surrendering five runs (two earned) in four innings of work while allowing six hits, no walks and striking out one. Eric DuBose pitched two innings allowing one unearned run on one hit while walking three and striking out two. Jimmy Kerney tossed a scoreless inning of relief giving up just one hit.

"This was a great way to start the season with a win against a very good Fike team," Aycock head coach Charles Davis said. "We just kept scrapping and playing hard."

The Golden Falcons host Clayton at 4 p.m. today.

Basketball

Dawgs ousted

CRESWELL -- Princeton rallied from 19 points down in the second half on Thursday before falling 59-54 at Creswell in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A playoffs.

The Bulldogs (18-9 overall) trailed 27-11 at the half and were down by as much as 19 points before trimming the deficit to 56-54. Turnovers and Creswell's ability to knock down free throws ultimately did in Princeton.

Seniorss Ryan Daughtry and Josh Barefoot each scored 17 points. Michael Radford and Chris Hinton each added six.

Saints' season ends

HOLLYWOOD -- After starting the season 0-6, Southern Wayne's impressive turnaround ended with a 74-56 loss at DH. Conley in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A playoffs on Thursday evening.

Seniors Jon Hart and Kendrick Thompson had their high school basketball careers come to a close. Hart paced the Saints (13-14 overall) with 18 points and Thompson had 11. Desmond Raiford chipped in 15.

Rob Levi scored 20 for Conley.

Saints earn road win

KENLY -- Southern Wayne opened its season with a 10-7 victory at North Johnston on Thursday.

Scott Holloman, Ricky Oddon and Cody Davis all had RBIs for the Saints. Michael Douglas, Jordan Hood and Bruce Rose got into the act offensively for Southern Wayne as well.

Phil Howell earned the win on the mound allowing one earned run over four innings to go with four strikeouts and two walks.

The Saints (1-0 overall) host East Duplin at 4 p.m. today.

Softball

Golden Falcons prevail

PIKEVILLE -- Emily Jordan pitched five scoreless innings and struck out 11 to lead Charles B. Aycock to a 7-0 win over Wilson Fike on Thursday.

Autumn Pittman was 1 for 3 with a pair of RBI. Leigh Smith and Amber Baker also had a hit apiece for the Golden Falcons.

The Golden Falcons (1-0 overall) welcome Clayton at 4 p.m. today.

Davis pitches WCS to win

Traci Davis pitched four innings of no-hit softball strikingout seven and Wayne Christian defeated Trinity Christian on Thursday.

A final score was not provided.

The teams were scoreless until Wayne Christian erupted for six, fourth-inning runs.

Kayla Kennedy finished 2 for 3 for the Eagles, the reigning N.C.Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A champions.

Cynthia Burroughs threw two innings of scoreless, seven-strikeout relief.

Wayne Christian (1-0 overall) hosts Princeton at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Princeton's season-opening game with Union, scheduled for today, has been moved to March 12.

Eagles top Crossroads

Wayne Christian needed just two minutes to get on the scoreboard and eventually defeated Crossroads Christian 4-0 in the season-opening game for both teams Thursday afternoon.

Laura Lee Hodson, Kaitlyn Kosuda, Brooke Barfield and Courtney Howell each scored for the Eagles.

"We have several things to work on but I feel good about the varsity team," Wayne Christian head coach Daryl Anderson said.

The Eagles (1-0 overall) play host to a soccer jamboree on Saturday.

CBA stumbles

CLAYTON -- Clayton held Charles B. Aycock off the scoreboard as the Golden Falcons fell 9-0 on Thursday evening.

C.B. Aycock is the guest of North Lenoir on Tuesday.

Junior varsity

* Eastern Wayne baseball 8, South Central 2 -- Zach Beachem's sixth-inning grand slam broke the game open for the Warriors (1-0).

Josh Frederick picked up the win on the mound and delivered two hits.

* Greene Central baseball 29, Ayden-Grifton 1 -- Zach Chase, Trent Murray and Will Crandle each had four hits for the Rams.

Derrick Grant finished 3 for 3 at the plate and pitcher Wes Siler got the win.

* Southern Wayne baseball 7, North Johnston 0 -- Miles Bradshaw and Dylan Jacobs each had hits and runs scored for the Saints and Travis Weaver collected the win on the mound.

Southern Wayne travels to East Duplin today.

* Clayton girls soccer 10, Charles B. Aycock 0 -- The Golden Falcons found scoring difficult in their season opener and will return to action on Tuesday at North Lenoir.
