MOC Sports Wrap: Rose, Greene emerge as low scorers

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Mick Moberg tied for 28th overall and Mount Olive finished 10th as a team at the AASU/Southbridge Pirate Men's Golf Invitational, which concluded Tuesday afternoon.

The Trojans carded a 36-hole score of 620 in the event, which was contested at the Southbridge Golf Course.

Moberg recorded a two-day total of 153. Freshman Clark Rose and Johnathan Greene each fired a 155. Johan Hagsund (157) tied for 41st and Josh Howard (165) ended up 55th.

Rose had the team's low second-round score of 76.

Mount Olive returns to action March 10 at the 2Targets-Barton College Intercollegiate at Wilson Country Club.

Trojans fall in poll

Mount Olive College fell to No. 17 in the latest NABC Division II men's top 25 poll released Tuesday afternoon.

The Trojans (21-5 overall) ended their regular-season home slate with a 10-point loss against Limestone (S.C.) University on Saturday. The defeat snapped Mount Olive's seven-game win streak and spoiled its bid for a perfect home campaign this season.

Mount Olive entered the week ranked No. 1 in the East Region poll. That could change today since California (Pa.) University rose to No. 14 nationally and was No. 2 in the region last week.

The Trojans, meanwhile, conclude regular-season play Saturday at defending national champion Barton. The noon contest will be televised by CSTV and FSN South.

Schlect selected

THOMASVILLE -- Mount Olive senior pitcher Ryan Schlecht has been named Conference Carolinas pitcher of the week for the second time this season.

A right-hander, Schlecht allowed one unearned run in Mount Olive's 11-1 victory over St. Andrews. He struck out eight, walked one and yielded five hits.

Schlecht (4-0) has allowed only two earned runs in 25 innings pitched this season for a 0.72 earned run average and has gone 20 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.

The No. 1-ranked Trojans (16-1 overall) visit in-state rival Chowan University today. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.

Softball sweep

THOMASVILLE -- Mount Olive's Jenny Jackson and Courtney Wallace collected the Conference Carolinas pitcher and player of the week awards, respectively, on Tuesday.

Wallace hit .538 for the week and shared team-high honors with seven RBI in four games. A transfer from South Florida Junior College, Wallace raised her season batting average nearly 250 points.

Jackson earned four mound wins for the Trojans. The junior right-hander threw a complete-game, four-hit shutout against Belmont Abbey. She retired all 12 batters she faced in the second game against the Crusaders.

Jackson threw two complete games against CIAA member N.C. Central, which is reclassifying to Division I. She posted a combined 19 strikeouts in the two games.

Mount Olive (6-2 overall) travels to Wingate today.

Monroe picked

THOMASVILLE -- Mount Olive guard Lakeisha Monroe won her second Conference Carolinas player of the week award in women's basketball.

A 5-foot-5 senior from Cameron, Monroe averaged 22.5 points a game in two Trojan victories last week. She tallied 21 points, six rebounds and four steals in a road win at Belmont Abbey. Against Limestone, Monroe provided 24 points, seven assists and four steals.

Monroe is the top scorer in Conference Carolinas play and ranks third in assists. She is also nationally ranked in scoring, field-goal percentage and assist-to-turnover ratio.

Mount Olive (17-9 overall) visits archrival Barton on Friday.

Streeter honored

THOMASVILLE -- Brandon Streeter claimed his third Conference Carolinas player of the week award this season, and fifth overall in his career with the nationally-ranked Mount Olive men's basketball team.

A 6-foot-6 senior from Jacksonville, Streeter averaged a double-double -- 26.5 points, 11.5 rebounds -- in two league games last week. He collected a career-high 28 points against Belmont Abbey and 25 points in a disappointing home loss to Limestone.

Streeter ranks fifth nationally in field-goal percentage.

The Trojans return to action Saturday at archrival Barton College.
