LAURINBURG -- No. 2-ranked Mount Olive College opened defense of its Conference Carolinas baseball title with a doubleheader sweep of in-state rival St. Andrews on a soggy Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans extended their win streak to 13 games with 11-1 and 13-2 victories at Coy Field on the Scotland County High School campus. Mount Olive improved to 15-1 overall, while St. Andrews remained winless in five conference outings this season.

The teams conclude the three-game series today.

Softball

MOUNT OLIVE -- Courtney Wallace, Jazzmine Lee and Jenny Jackson each ripped a home run as Mount Olive thrashed Belmont Abbey 11-0 in the first game of their Conference Carolinas doubleheader.

The three round-trippers, including Jackson's grand slam, highlighted an eight-run, second-inning outburst.

Lee, a freshman from Charles B. Aycock, singled home the game-winning run in the eighth inning as the Trojans edged the Crusaders, 7-6. Kat Cahoon's first-ever collegiate home run tied the game at 7-7 in the seventh inning.

Mount Olive (6-2 overall) visits Wingate on Tuesday.

Men's volleyball

BOSTON -- Mount Olive extended its win streak to four matches by sweeping New Haven (Conn.) and host Emmanuel College in a three-team invitational on Saturday.

The Trojans (10-4 overall) knocked off New Haven 30-21, 30-22, 30-23. They turned back Emmanuel 30-18, 30-21, 30-22.

Mount Olive concludes its home schedule next weekend with a four-team invitational. The Trojans face in-state rival Lees-McRae, York (Pa.) and Warner Southern.

Play begins Friday.
