Rosewood boys turn back Spring Creek

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Rosewood picked up a key 71-63 victory at Class 1-A Carolina Conference and county rival Spring Creek on Tuesday.

Tyler Muntz paced the Eagles (7-12 overall, 3-5 CC) with 22 points. Holt Rains had 13 and Terrance Toran supplied 12.

Eugene Robinson scored 14 points for the Gators (5-12, 2-6 CC) and Melvin Deveaux pitched in 13.

Rosewood hosts North Duplin on Tuesday, while Spring Creek entertains North Johnston.

Warriors come back

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne continued its postseason push with a come-from-behind, 72-63 triumph over Wilson Beddingfield on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference scene.

The Warriors trailed 39-27 at halftime, but answered with a 20-9 third-quarter outburst. Will White supplied 10 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter as Eastern Wayne (7-13 overall) seized its third ECC victory in eight tries this season.

Eastern Wayne's Jamere Thomas led all scorers with 20 points. Daviyon Whisonant contributed 12.

Rebels falter

AYDEN -- Overwhelmed by a 25-point first quarter, the North Duplin Rebels would never recover Friday, as they fell 67-46 to Ayden Grifton.

Chris Graham tossed in 18 points for the Rebels (2-12, 0-8), the only player to reach double figures for the home team. Ayden Grifton (14-6, 8-0) got their offensive spark from the duo of Matt Daugherty and Steffon McGhee who scored 23 and 19 respectively. The only other player in double-figures was AGHS's Victor Howell with 11.

The Rebels will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to Rosewood.

CBA falls in ECC

PIKEVILLE -- A senior night victory just wasn't mean to be for Charles B. Aycock as Wilson Hunt left Pikeville with an 81-58 win on Friday night.

Isaac Royals and Khendra Reid each scored 14 points for the Golden Falcons. Bobby Artis had eight. Tyheim Pitt and Jonathan Williams both tallied six.

Bobby White lead Hunt with 17 points.

Aycock (3-16 overall, 1-7 ECC) visits rival Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

Dawgs bite NJ

PRINCETON -- Ryan Daughtry scored a game-high 21 points and Princeton turned back Class 1-A Carolina Conference foe North Johnston on Friday.

The victory moved the Bulldogs (17-5 overall, 6-2 CC) one step closer to clinching second place in the conference.

Josh Barefoot finished with 15 points. Chris Hinton and Benton Myers added six points apiece, while Will Gainey had five.

Justin Price led the Panthers with 14 points.

Princeton travels to Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday for a pivotal conference showdown. The Chargers edged the Bulldogs earlier this season.

Chargers corraled

WILSON -- Greenfield completed its sweep of Wayne Country Day with an 80-70 victory on Friday night and clinched the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference regular season title.

Reco McCarter finished with 25 points for the Chargers. Floronta Wynn added 21 and Tim Hobbs had 10.

Wayne Country Day (20-6, 6-2 CPIC) will host Kerr-Vance in the semifinal round of the CPIC tournament at 8 p.m. on Friday.

Girls

Cougars hang on

By ratcheting up the intensity on defense Goldsboro forced more fourth- quarter turnovers (six) than it did the previous three quarters combined and outlasted North Lenoir 64-60 on Friday night.

The victory helped the Cougars (9-12 overall, 5-3 EPC) move into a tie with the Hawks for second place in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference as Goldsboro sets its sights on a trip to Greene Central on Tuesday.

"We're growing up together and that's big for us," Cougars head coach Brandy Smith said. "One thing we've been working on in practice is getting stops on defense and then converting on offense and we got a couple of key turnovers back-to-back and it helped big time."

Millicent Kornegay led Goldsboro with 18 points, Ki'anna Williams contributed 14 and Tiffany Pearsall and Zeara McDuffie each scored 11.

North Lenoir's (13-9, 5-3 EPC) Helena Davis led all scorers with 23.

Gaines downs Hunt

PIKEVILLE -- Senior Chantel Gaines sank the game-winning free throw with 2.7 seconds remaining as Charles B. Aycock edged Wilson Hunt 46-45 on Friday evening.

Gaines poured in a game-high 23 points for the Golden Falcons, who started the game-winning possession with 13.7 seconds to go. Gaines drove into the lane, drew the foul and guided Aycock to just its third win of the season.

Hunt missed a 3-pointer as time expired.

Yolanda Pitt, who triggered the inbounds pass to Gaines, supplied 11 points in a winning effort.

C.B. Aycock (3-19 overall) improved to 2-6 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play, and is the guest of Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

Rebels fall at AG

AYDEN -- North Duplin surrendered 21 fourth-quarter points and dropped a 51-33 decision at Ayden Grifton on Friday.

"Poor shooting killed us tonight. We took good shots but they just didn't fall." Rebel coach Danny Blackburn said. "We have played two of our best games against the top two teams in the conference, we just don't have the end result to show how hard we play," Blackburn added.

Jessica Pridgen paced the Rebels (5-9, 2-6) with 16 points and was helped out by six markers from Rebecca Coats. Krystal Williams set the pace for AGHS (16-5, 7-1), dropping in 18 points. Lakwoya West also finished in double figures for Ayden Grifton, netting 11 points.

North Duplin will travel to Rosewood for another conference clash on Tuesday.

Gators edge Eagles

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek stepped up the defensive intensity in the fourth quarter and held off visiting Rosewood 52-48 on Friday.

The Gators (4-13 overall, 2-6) were paced by Melanique Deveaux and Tasha Whitfield, each tallying 18 points in the victory. Whitfield also contributed 11 rebounds to notch a double-double.

Spring Creek hosts conference leading North Johnston on Tuesday. Rosewood (5-14, 1-7) will return home Tuesday for a game against North Duplin.

Saints sink Vikings

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne pulled away down the stretch on their way to a much-needed 51-36 victory over visiting Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Kinston on Friday.

Lynnesha Leonard led the Saints (12-9 overall, 4-4 ECC) with 12 points and was helped out by 11 from Brianna Lofton. The Vikings (8-10, 3-5 ECC) were paced by Audrianna Hall, who netted 15 points.

Southern Wayne will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to Wilson Hunt .

Rams defeated

BETHEL -- Failing to place a player in double figures Greene Central fell 39-26 at North Pitt on Friday night.

Ashley Simmons led the Rams with six points, Nicole Cannon contributed five and Tia Jones had four.

North Pitt's Makeea Suggs scored a game-high 16.

Greene Central (2-20, 1-7 EPC) hosts Goldsboro on Tuesday.

Junior varsity

* Princeton boys 61, North Johnston 51 -- Patrick Jacobs paced Princeton (13-7, 6-2 CC) with 21 points.

* Spring Creek boys 65, Rosewood 64 -- Kenneth Freeman scored 21 points to lead the Gators to victory. Cody Harris finished with 22 points for the Eagles (6-13, 3-5 CC), Jonathan Franks tallied 20 points and Trevor Cox had 13.

* Wayne Country Day boys 47, Greenfield 38 -- Wayne Country Day captured the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference regular-season title with the victory. Stoan Stewart scored 16 points and Tanner Pate had 12. The Chargers (21-1, 6-0 CPIC) will host Faith Christian in the first round of the CPIC tournament on Thursday.

Middle schools

* Johnston Christian boys 25, Wayne Christian 24 -- Josiah Davis had 12 points for Wayne Christian in a losing effort in the finals of the Eastern Carolina Christian Middle School Conference tournament finals. Derek Brewington led Johnston Christian with 19 points and earned tournament MVP honors. Davis was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Wayne Christian's Chase Darden and Chandler Harrell were named to the all-tournament team. The Eagles finished the year 15-5 overall.

* Wayne Christian girls 34, Cape Fear Christian 17 -- Brooke Barfield paced the Eagles with 11 points as Wayne Christian captured the Eastern Carolina Christian Middle School Conference tournament title. Meredith Burroughs added eight points and 11 rebounds. Burroughs was named the tournament MVP, while Barfield, Courtney Howell and Niki Fitzmorris were each named to the all-tournament team. The Eagles (8-6 overall, 4-0) finished the season with a five-game winning streak.
