Warriors post 1-1 record, Topsail ousts Rosewood

Northeastern Albemarle champion Currituck County collected three quick pins and ousted Eastern Wayne 57-16 from the Class 3-A N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team wrestling playoffs.

"Those quick pins just deflated our boys," said Eastern Wayne coach Mike Brown.

Sophomore Drew Tesar, senior Chris Tesar, Brandon Darby and Foy Coley each earned an individual victory against the Knights. Drew prevailed in overtime, while Coley upended heavyweight Alex Brown 4-2. Ranked among the state's top 10 wrestlers, Brown suffered just his third loss of the season in 45 outings.

Brown said forfeits also factored into the overall outcome.

The Warriors hammered Mideastern 3-A/4-A member Jacksonville 50-29 in the opening round. Drew Tesar, Jordan Harris, Chris Tesar, Cody Britt and Tyler Wicks each pinned their respective opponent.

Darby received a forfeit, while Zach Hahn won by disqualification.

"The boys were up for it and we had good matchups," said Brown.

Chris Tesar exited with a 197-9 career record.

The Warriors concluded the year 14-11.

Eagles eliminated

HAMPSTEAD -- Topsail erupted for five consecutive individual wins during a decisive mid-match run and eliminated Rosewood 47-28 from the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A dual-team playoffs.

The Eagles' J.D. Baker recorded a major decision at 130 pounds and Josh Holmes posted a second-period fall at 145. The Pirates, champions of the Coastal Plains Conference, led just 14-10 at that point.

But they quickly pulled away.

Rosewood surrendered four pins and a decision as Topsail built an insurmountable 41-10 advantage. The Pirates forfeited out to heavyweight Trevor Morris, 103-pounder Olivia Neal and 112-pounder Kelly Cosgrove.

Topsail picked up a forfeit at 119.

"Any time we make it to the state playoffs, it gives us a sense of satisfaction," said Rosewood coach Bill Edmundson. "The hard part is convincing the kids that just being there isn't enough. I thought we were overwhelmed tonight and lost several close matches that we should have won.

"We are more competitive than what we showed tonight."

Rosewood concluded the year 21-11.
