MOC volleyball - St. Francis spikers rally past Trojan men

LORETTO, Pa. -- Osvaldo Perez notched the first double-double of his collegiate career with 19 kills and 10 digs, but St. Francis (Pa.) outlasted Mount Olive in five sets on Sunday afternoon.

Red Flash sophomore Jordan Varee provided a school-record 33 kills in a 27-30, 30-19, 23-30, 30-24, 15-13 triumph over the Trojans. St. Francis grabbed its second consecutive victory and snapped Mount Olive's win streak at three matches.

Varee's five kills fueled a game-ending 10-1 run as the Red Flash forced a decisive fifth set. A double block from the sophomore duo of Pete Freyer and Nick Rivett sealed game five for St. Francis, which improved to 3-4 overall.

Jose Lanier complemented Perez with 15 kills, four service aces and three blocks. Senior setter Zach Wilson dished out 54 assists.

Mount Olive (4-3) concludes its three-game, northern road swing today at perennial Division I power Penn State University. The Nittany Lions are ranked No. 3 nationally and unbeaten in seven outings this season.

The Trojans began their three-day journey with a four-set upset of four-time defending Division III national champion Juniata (Pa.) University on Saturday. Penate provided 17 kills and notched a team-high six digs in a come-from-behind 19-30, 30-23, 30-27, 30-19 victory.

Juniata entered the match ranked No. 3 in the AVCA Division III top 15 poll.

Perez provided 13 kills, while Jose Lanier supplied 11 kills and three service aces. Defensively, Mike Carroll posted four blocks and Noel Garcia contributed three blocks.

Wilson dished out 41 assists.
