North Duplin girls roll in fourth quarter

CALYPSO -- The North Duplin girls' basketball team exploded for 26 fourth-quarter points and captured a come-from-behind, 61-47 victory over Class 1-A Carolina Conference foe Rosewood.

The Eagles led 41-34 after three quarters.

"I challenged them (in the fourth) to be tougher than they've ever been and they responded," said Rebels head coach Danny Blackburn. "If there was a loose ball on the floor, we went and got it. We played the best quarter of basketball we have ever played in the fourth quarter."

North Duplin held Rosewood without a field goal and just six points total -- all from the free throw line in the fourth.

Jodie Williamson collected 15 of her game-high 25 points in the final eight minutes of action. Jessica Pridgen added 16, while Rebecca Coates and Sam Cates contributed seven points apiece.

Haile Meadows paced the Eagles' offense with nine points. Shantal Johnson and Paige Babb scored eight points apiece. Taylor Johnson, Mary Jo Moore and Jennifer Hall each provided six points.

The Rebels (4-6 overall, 1-3 CC) travel to archrival Spring Creek next Tuesday, while the Eagles (5-10, 1-3) entertain archrival Princeton.

Warriors rebound

KINSTON -- Senior forward Brittani Billups recorded a double-double as Eastern Wayne easily defeated Kinston 57-43 on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference scene.

Billups, who has signed with Longwood (Va.) University, scored 24 points on 11 of 19 shooting from the floor and pulled down 10 rebounds. She blocked six shots and dished out two assists.

Tiara McIntyre added 13 points, including nine from 3-point range. Eboni Reid handed out a team-high eight assists to go along with six rebounds and three steals.

Jasmine Middleton recorded eight points and nine rebounds.

Eastern Wayne (13-3 overall, 3-1 ECC) concludes first-half conference play Tuesday at county rival Charles B. Aycock.

Hawks upend Cougars

LaGRANGE -- Helena Davis supplied nine of her game-high 13 points in the second half as North Lenoir turned back Goldsboro 47-38 at Wooten Gymnasium.

"We had lost two games in a row, so we knew we had to come out here and get a win," said Davis. "We knew that for us to have a chance to win the conference, we had to have tonight's game."

The Hawks held the Cougars to just two points and forced eight turnovers in the final eight minutes.

Freshman Kristen Davenport added 12 points and eight rebounds for North Lenoir. Enjoli Mason contributed nine first-half points.

Ki'ana Williams finished as Goldsboro's top scorer with 11 points. The Cougars (6-11 overall) fell to 2-2 in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play.

Gators fall on road

KENLY -- Turnovers, foul trouble and missed scoring chances at the free throw line proved crucial as Spring Creek fell to North Johnston 48-32 in Carolina 1-A Conference play.

The Gators shot just 3 of 15 at the stripe and committed 21 turnovers.

"We struggled on the offensive end finishing shots ... got the looks, just didn't finish," said Spring Creek coach Mandy Ramfjord. "We showed up tonight and played together on the court. We played aggressive on the defensive end for four straight quarters."

Melanique DeVeaux led Spring Creek with 12 points and eight rebounds. Tasha Whitfield contributed eight points and six rebounds. Maura Phipps (six points) and Richelle Butler (four points) combined for nine rebounds.

The Gators (2-11 overall, 0-4 Carolina) entertain archrival North Duplin on Tuesday.

Wayne Christian wins

Charity Wright pumped in a team-leading 14 points and Wayne Christian stopped New Life Camp of Raleigh 55-43 on Friday evening.

It was the Eagles' fourth consecutive win.

Hanna Kaler added 13 points, while Jennifer Price contributed nine. Hope Wright and Kayla Kennedy tallied nine and eight points, respectively.

Wayne Christian (9-5 overall) travels to Northwood Temple on Feb. 1.

GC tripped up

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central suffered a 47-42 home loss to Eastern Plains 2-A rival North Pitt on Friday.

Dominique Graham's double-double of 12 points 11 rebounds wasn't enough to lead the Rams (3-11 overall, 1-3 EPC) to victory. Brittane Jones scored eight points and T.T. Pettaway and Shana Parker each added seven.

Greene Central hosts conference foe North Lenoir on Tuesday.

Boys

EW falls hard

Eastern Wayne was no match for Kinston on Friday as the state-ranked Vikings cruised to a 67-46, Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference road win.

Jamir Thomas led the Warriors with 10 points. Orlando Midgette pitched in nine, while Will White and Hassan Best each had seven.

Kinston's Reggie Bullock led all scorers with 15.

Eastern Wayne (5-11 overall, 1-3 ECC) visits Charles B. Aycock on Tuesday.

Eagles earn road win

CALYPSO -- Rosewood captured its first Carolina 1-A Conference victory of the season with a 48-40 victory at North Duplin on Friday.

Sean Cornman paced the Eagles (5-10 overall, 1-3 CC) offense with 10 points and Tyler Muntz contributed nine.

Terrell Midyette and Chris Graham both scored 10 points for the Rebels.

Rosewood entertains Princeton on Tuesday while North Duplin (2-8, 0-4 CC) visits rival Spring Creek.

Rams slip past NP

SNOW HILL -- Four different Rams scored in double-figures and Greene Central sent North Pitt home with a 71-68 loss in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play Friday night.

Danny Moye scored a game-high 22 points, Bobby Waters tallied 15 and Albert Barron and Curtis Braswell each had 12.

Marcus Williams led North Pitt with 15 points.

The Rams (4-14 overall, 2-2 EPC) play host to North Lenoir on Tuesday.

Junior varsity

* Southern Wayne boys 37, C.B. Aycock 33 -- Octavis Oates was the Saints' top scorer with eight points. Shepard Whitfield posted a double-double -- 10 points, 12 rebounds -- for the Golden Falcons. Teammate RaJohn Ormond added eight points. C.B. Aycock (2-14 overall) fell to 1-3 in Eastern Carolina 3-A play, and entertains Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

* Rosewood boys 48, North Duplin 36 -- Trevor Cox led the Eagles with 21 points and Jonathan Franks tacked on 11. The Eagles (6-9 overall, 3-1 CC) face Princeton on Tuesday.

* Eastern Wayne boys 62, Kinston 55 -- Jamir Best and Jaquar Kelly each had 16 points to lead the Warriors (13-2 overall, 3-1 ECC) to victory. Marcus Thompson and Jonathan Midgette each pitched in seven points.

* Greene Central boys 65, North Pitt 60 -- Marquis Grant paced the Rams (6-10 overall, 2-2 EPC) with 19 points and Kelsey Dixon added 11.

* Eastern Wayne girls 54, Kinston 25 -- Ashley Cobb and Natalia Dungee collected nine points apiece for the Warriors. Morgan Smith scored eight. Eastern Wayne (10-2 overall, 2-1 ECC) entertains the Vikings next Tuesday afternoon.

9th grade

* Goldsboro boys 71, East Duplin 45 -- Adan Hobbs led a balanced Cougar offensive attack with 12 points. Darrius Currie added 10, while Joshua Peacock contributed nine. Jarran Reed and Michael Sawyer pumped in eight points apiece. Ricky Shaw provided seven points. Goldsboro (11-4 overall) plays host to J.H. Rose on Tuesday.

Middle schools

* Parrott Academy boys 29, Wayne Christian 22 -- Josiah Davis provided 10 points, two blocked shots and two steals in the Eagles' loss at Clifford Gymnatorium. Chase Darden added six points. Kyle Sasser contributed five rebounds, four blocks, three steals and two assists. Wayne Christian (12-3 overall) plays host to St. Peter's on Tuesday.
