DUDLEY -- The Charles B. Aycock wrestling team prevailed in five of eight contested matches and cruised past county rival Southern Wayne 54-17 on Tuesday evening.
The Golden Falcons (15-5 overall) climbed into a first-place tie with archrival Eastern Wayne at 3-0 in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference. Those teams meet Jan. 30 in Pikeville to decide the league champion and No. 1 seed for the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs.
"It was good to get back on the mat following an extended layoff due to weather and exams," said Aycock coach Mark Bass. "The guys wrestled really well in spite of the layoff. This conference win was big ... puts us one step away from achieving one of our goals set back in early November."
Senior Drake Gurley (119 pounds), Joseph Conner (125), Brandon Bailey (130), Kevin Carmel (135) and Freddie Coley (171) each recorded a pin against the short-handed Saints.
Southern Wayne yielded forfeits to Justin Farrell (112), Ryan Butts (152), Bryan Diorio (189) and Jarrett Covar (215).
Senior heavyweight Josh Robinson upset the Golden Falcons' Khiry Reid in four overtimes. Reid entered the match ranked No. 1 in the state, according to ncmat.com. Teammates Dustin Richardson (140), Tristan Bass (145) and John Futrell (160) also triumphed.
