Gurganus' layup lifts Aycock in ECC opener

WILSON -- David Gurganus' layup at the buzzer lifted Charles B. Aycock to a 59-58 win its Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener at Wilson Beddingfield on Friday.

After losing Jonathan Williams in the first quarter to a cut above the eye and Khendra Reid to foul trouble, the Golden Falcons were forced to look elsewhere for production.

Gurganus finished with a team-high 13 points and Kyle LaFlamme came off the bench to draw four first-quarter charges. Jordan Riley added 11 points, Reid had 10 and reserve Andre Bryant contributed nine.

Aycock (3-12 overall, 1-0 ECC) entertains state-ranked Kinston next Friday.

Chargers cruise

Wayne Country Day bolted to a 23-7 first-quarter lead and dumped Faith Christian-Rocky Mount 75-44 in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference opener for both teams.

Floronta Wynn and Reco McCarter took advantage of the lopsided contest and putting on a dunking clinic, including Wynn's dunk over a Faith defender off an alley-oop from McCarter. Wynn led the Chargers (14-4 overall, 1-0 CPIC) with 19 points.

Kevin Martell scored 14 points, whle McCarter chipped in 12. Josh Gregory provided 11 points.

Wayne Country Day travels to CPIC member Oakwood on Monday.

Bulldogs cage Gators

PRINCETON -- Princeton continued its winning ways with a 55-46 conquest of Carolina 1-A Conference foe Spring Creek on Friday.

Ryan Daughtry led the Bulldogs (12-3 overall, 1-0 CC) with 28 points, including 13 in the first quarter. Chris Hinton had nine points and eight rebounds. Josh Barefoot added six points and 10 rebounds.

Melvin Deveaux led the Gators (3-7, 0-1) with 11 points.

Princeton travels to North Duplin on Friday, while Spring Creek welcomes defending conference champion Ayden-Grifton.

Eagles fall

AYDEN -- Rosewood's attempt to snap out of its post-Christmas slump was unsuccessful on Friday night with a 56-35 loss at Carolina 1-A Conference member Ayden Grifton.

Tyler Muntz led the Eagles with 18 points and Stephen McIntyre had 11.

Rosewood (4-8 overall, 0-1 CC) plays host to North Johnston on Friday.

Rebels stumble

CALYPSO -- Less than a month into its basketball season, North Duplin has yet to find some consistency after a 63-44 loss to North Johnston in the Carolina 1-A Conference opener for both teams Friday.

The Rebels trailed 31-18 at the half and were outscored 32-26 in the second half.

Chris Graham finished with 12 points for North Duplin. Teammates Quentin Graham and Terell Midyette added 10.

The Rebels (2-5 overall, 0-1 CC) host Princeton on Friday.

Girls basketball

WCDS victorious

Behind 22 points from Bridgette Briggs and 15 from Catherine Ford, Wayne Country Day earned a 44-21 victory over Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference rival Faith Christian of Rocky Mount on Friday.

Kim Martell added four points off the bench as the Chargers (6-7 overall, 1-0 CPIC) won their fourth straight game.

Ranked eighth in the latest N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Poll, Wayne Country Day visits Oakwood on Monday.

W. Christian triumphs

Hope Wright supplied a double-double -- 11 points, 11 rebounds -- as Wayne Christian throttled Norlina Christian 45-12 on the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference scene Saturday afternoon.

Brittany Sullivan contributed 12 points, six rebounds and two steals. Logan Dawson chipped in six points, five rebounds and one steal. Devan Isenhower, Kaitlyn Kosuda, Hanna Kaler, Jennifer Price, Kayla Kennedy and Charity Wright provided at least one bucket apiece in the win.

Wayne Christian (6-5 overall) entertains Community Christian on Tuesday.

Conquerors earn win

After falling in overtime at N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A opponent Cornerstone Christian on Thursday night, Faith Christian defeated Hilltop Christian 44-30 on Friday night.

Lindsey Godwin scored 13 points for the Conquerors (7-4 overall, 5-1 NCSAA). Alyssa Hill had 10 points and 14 rebounds. Madison Caudle added seven points and 10 boards, while Rebecca Smith pitched in six points and seven rebounds.

Faith Christian entertains Falls Road on Friday night.

Princeton tops SC

PRINCETON -- Brittany Baker scored a game-high 19 points and Ashley Braswell and Rebecca Harlan each added seven points as Princeton downed Spring Creek 52-30 on Friday evening.

It was the Carolina 1-A Conference opener for both teams.

Shaquita Brooks led the Gators (2-8 overall, 0-1 CC) with 11 points, while Melanique Deveaux contributed six points.

Princeton (6-9, 1-0 CC) travels to North Duplin on Friday, while Spring Creek plays at home against Ayden-Grifton.

CBA loses on the road

WILSON -- No. 1-ranked Wilson Beddingfield placed three different players in double figures and handed Charles B. Aycock an 87-43 loss in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opener for both teams on Friday.

Chantel Gaines led the Golden Falcons (1-14, 0-1 ECC) with 20 points.

Ansia Dial and Monique Spry each scored 18 points for Beddingfield. Shaniqua Clay had 16 for the Bruins, now 15-0 overall and winners of 21 consecutive ECC regular-season contests.

Aycock hosts Kinston on Friday.

Rams turn back FC

SNOW HILL -- After struggling through the non-conference portion of its schedule, Greene Central opened Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play with a 36-28 win over visiting Farmville Central on Friday.

Dominique Graham led the Rams (2-13 overall, 1-0 EPC) with 12 points. Brittany Jones scored seven points, while Tete Pettaway and Jocelyn Conner each had six points.

Greene Central visits Goldsboro on Friday.

Panthers silence Rebels

CALYPSO -- Rebecca Coats emerged North Duplin's top scorer with nine points, but North Johnston delivered most of the offensive firepower in a 59-32 victory Friday evening.

It was the Carolina 1-A Conference opener for both teams.

Jodie Williamson and Crystal Robinson added five points apiece for the Rebels.

Leann Birdsall led the Panthers, who led 26-2 after one quarter, with 18 points. Amanda Sharpe added nine, while Haley Newsome knocked down five points.

North Duplin (3-4 overall, 0-1 CC) welcomes Princeton on Friday.

JV sports

* Wayne Christian girls 42, Wilson Christian 30 -- Charity Wright posted a double-double -- 12 points, 10 rebounds -- in the Eagles' non-conference victory at Clifford Gymnatorium. Carly Hightower provided 12 points, six rebounds and four steals. Devan Isenhower (six points, five rebounds) and Kayla Kennedy (game-high seven assists) also contributed to the win. Wayne Christian (7-3 overall) plays host to Cary Christian on Monday.

* Goldsboro boys 79, Tarboro 45 -- Goldsboro pitched a fourth-quarter shutout (24-0) and claimed its Eastern Plains 2-A Conference opener. Resean Brewington pumped in a game-high 29 points for the Cougars. Devonte White and Robert Washington contributed 18 and 10 points, apiece. Nine players scored for Goldsboro, which improved to 6-4 overall.

* Ayden-Grifton boys 66, Rosewood 38 -- Cody Harris and Jonathan Franks each had 13 points for Rosewood. The Eagles (3-9 overall, 0-1 CC) host North Johnston on Friday.

* Charles B. Aycock boys 54, Wilson Beddingfield 37 -- Matt Woodard scored 15 points for the Golden Falcons (2-11 overall, 1-0 ECC), RaJohn Ormond and Shepard Whitfield both had 12 and Tucker Pearson added eight assists.

* Wayne Country Day boys 65, Faith Christian-Rocky Mount 43 -- Tanner Pate scored 21 points for the Chargers, who improved to 12-1 overall. Hil had 13, while Cameron Ford tallied 12. Stoan Stewart pitched in 10.

* Eastern Wayne girls 41, Southern Wayne 21 -- Janielle Daniels led the Warriors with 12 points and Mauriel Baker had 10 points. Eastern Wayne (9-1, 1-0 ECC) visits Wilson Hunt on Friday.

* Wayne Christian girls 42, Wilson Christian 30 -- Charity Wright finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Eagles to victory on Saturday. Carly Hightower added 12 points, six rebounds and four steals, Devan Isenhower had six points and five rebounds and Kayla Kennedy netted five points and seven assists. Wayne Christian (7-3) hosts Cary Christian on Monday.
