WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock remained unbeaten in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference wrestling ranks with a 49-25 conquest of Wilson Beddingfield on Thursday evening.

The Golden Falcons triumphed in 9 of 12 contested matches and recorded seven falls in its second ECC victory of the season. Aycock (9-4 overall) claimed its 10th consecutive win against league opposition.

"It was good to get back on track after Christmas and follow up a couple of losses at the Knightdale Duals with a conference win," said Aycock head coach Mark Bass. "The guys wrestled pretty well considering it is their first competition following a nearly two-week layoff."

Senior 119-pounder Drake Gurley earned the night's fastest pin with a 25-second fall over the Bruins' Jose Sobrano. Joseph Conner (125 pounds), Kevin Carmel (140), Ryan Butts (145), Bryan Diorio (189), Jarrett Covar (215) and heavyweight Khiry Reid each recorded a first-period fall. Reid is the state's top-ranked 285-pounder among 3-A grapplers, according to the latest Super 32 Report released by ncmat.com.

Jacob Marple scored a major decision over Alfredo Saldago at 135 pounds. Josh Grimes turned back the Bruins' Aaron Webb at 171 pounds.

"Every conference win we get is a bonus and puts us another step closer to realizing one of the goals we set for ourselves at the first of the season," said Bass.

C.B. Aycock plays host to the annual Pilkington Memorial Duals on Saturday. First-round matches are slated for 9 a.m.

Eagles climb Overhills

SPRING LAKE -- Rosewood emerged victorious in eight of 10 contested matches and rolled past Overhills 66-14 on Thursday evening.

The Eagle grapplers added three forfeits in the non-conference rout.

"It's really good to get back into a routine after the winter holidays," said Rosewood head coach Bill Edmundson. "I thought our team looked sharp tonight and some of the less-experienced wrestlers got an opportunity to shine."

Cameron Lowe started Rosewood's pin procession with a third-period fall over Garreth Hoffman at 140 pounds. Josh Holmes (145 pounds) followed with a first-period stick of Horase Clegg.

After Overhills pulled within 18-14 overall, the Eagles unleashed a match-clinching 48-0 run. Jacob Roberts started the surge with a 59-second fall against Hunter Barreto at 171 pounds. Teammate Jon Rudolph executed a perfect standing cradle to pin Luke Miller in 26 seconds.

"I was very proud of Jonathan," said Edmundson.

Brandon Dean (215) and heavyweight Trevor Morris followed with consecutive first-period falls. Olivia Neal and Kelly Cosgrove, the Eagles' anchors at the lower weights, each recorded a pin.

"Olivia and Kelly have changed a lot of minds when it comes to females competing against male wrestlers," said Edmundson.

Ryan Cosgrove (119) and J.D. Baker (125) each received a forfeit to end the run. Scott Pate (130) also drew a forfeit.

Rosewood (9-8 overall) returns to action Saturday in the Pilkington Memorial Duals at Charles B. Aycock.

Gators end skid

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Junior captain Sebastian Jackson recorded the match-clinching fall at 152 pounds as Spring Creek claimed a come-from-behind, 42-40 decision over Ayden-Grifton.

Jackson's victory helped the Gators snap a four-match losing streak.

Spring Creek (1-4 overall) received individual wins from captain Ross Montafia (189 pounds), heavyweight Josh Rodriguez, Garrett Lewis (103), Daniel Richter (119), David Smith (125) and Matt Richter (130).

The Gators took seven individual matches overall.

Spring Creek entertains East Duplin and Greene Central next Thursday.

Boys basketball

Princeton tops Union

Three different Bulldogs scored in doubl figures to help Princeton to a 58-49 win over visiting Union on Thursday.

Ryan Daughtry and Chris Hinton each finished with 18 points. Hinton added nine rebounds. Josh Barefoot added 13 points.

Princeton improves to 10-3 and will host Hobbton on Tuesday.

Middle schools

* Rosewood boys 46, Eastern Wayne 39 -- Nathan Huyser finished with 26 points for Rosewood and Shane Whitley added eight. Kendrick Williams pulled down 11 rebounds. Javon Darden scored eight points for Eastern Wayne. Rosewood (4-2, 2-0) visits Brogden on Monday.

* Greenwood boys 50, Dillard 35 -- Brandon McCarter led Greenwood with 13 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Shaq Wright had 12 points and Tykwan Days added nine points and five assists. Greenwood (4-1) hosts Eastern Wayne on Monday.

* Rosewood girls 31, Eastern Wayne 21 -- Carrie Jo Gurley led Rosewood with 10 points.

* Spring Creek girls 39, Brogden 33 -- Talaya Lassiter scored 28 points for Spring Creek and Kaitlyn Casey added eight. Dikeya Cox had 17 points for Brogden and Mi Muhammed pitched in eight.
