Southern Wayne rules ECC foes

PIKEVILLE -- Coaches can game plan, strategize and prepare for Southern Wayne's backfield tandem of Kelvin Flow and Tristan Bass.

Stopping them, however, is a completely different story.

Flow and Bass combined for 277 yards rushing and six touchdowns as the Saints cruised to a 41-16 victory over Charles B. Aycock at Hardy-Talton Stadium on Friday evening.

The Saints (7-4 overall) dampened the Golden Falcons' senior night celebration in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference regular-season finale for both teams.

"We've got a very good offensive line," Southern Wayne head coach Bob Warren said. "They give those guys some holes, and Tristan and Kelvin are great runners. They got some great holes, and there were a few times they got through really good."

After the Golden Falcons (3-7 overall, 2-3 ECC) marched down the field and took an early 7-0 lead on Jacob Pendleton's three-yard touchdown run, turnovers and a solid ground game helped the Saints take over.

Flow's first touchdown run came from five yards out with less than eight minutes to go in the first half. Jordan Williams' extra point was no good, and Aycock still led 7-6.

The Golden Falcons punted on their next possession, but Bryant Hill's kick hit the back of a teammate and the Saints recovered at the Aycock eight-yard line. Three plays later, Flow found the end zone again. Flow ran in the two-point conversion, and Southern Wayne (5-0 ECC) took a 14-7 lead into the break.

Bass delivered a back-breaking blow to Aycock early in the third quarter with a 56-yard touchdown run.

"You get focused on Flow, and the next thing you know, Tristan cuts back and breaks a long one," Pinkowski said.

Aycock drove the length of the field on its next possession, but was forced to settle for a field goal after Kendre Reid dropped a sure touchdown pass in the endzone.

On Southern Wayne's next offensive play, Flow erupted 61 yards for a score.

"Offensively, I thought we moved the ball well," Pinkowski said. "But, we shot ourselves in the foot twice and we dropped (two touchdowns). I think that speaks a little bit to our athleticism. As a coach I can call plays, but I can't go out there and catch it for them and things like that."

Flow (127 yards, four TDs) and Bass (150 yards, two TDs) each had touchdown runs later in the second half as they pounded on a visibly tired Aycock defense. Kelton Lewis added a late score for the Golden Falcons but it was too little too late.

This night belonged to Southern Wayne as the Saints clinched its first outright ECC title and just the program's third overall in three-plus decades.

"It was very important to finish," Warren said. "The last time Southern Wayne won the conference outright was 1975. We wanted to go into the playoffs in a positive away."
