Dustin Uzzardo tossed two touchdown passes and Goldsboro dumped North Lenoir 39-0 for a share of the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference title on Monday evening.
It was the Cougars' first league title since 1996 when they competed in the old Mideastern 4-A Conference. Goldsboro (7-3 overall) kept sole possession of the EPC lead at 4-0.
"We really wanted to stay focused," Goldsboro head coach Eric Reid said. "I didn't want the weekend to get in the way with having to play on Monday instead of Friday. The score doesn't really indicate the game.
"North Lenoir did a wonderful job of shutting down some things we wanted to do. We had to pass the ball a little more than we wanted to."
Uzzardo put the Cougars on the board with a 77-yard touchdown strike to Enrique Moses midway through the opening quarter. Moses finished with two receptions, both touchdowns, as Uzzardo completed just three passes overall in four tries.
Backfield mates Anthony Council and Hykeem Coley each surpassed the 100-yard mark on a combined 16 carries. Council, who rushed for 144 yards, provided a 36-yard touchdown run in the second period. Coley (102) added a 53-yard scoring jaunt in the third quarter.
Iveon Sprangle's 13-yard gallop and Alex Aldridge's 30-yard fumble return accounted for Goldsboro's other two touchdowns.
The Cougars limited the Hawks (0-10, 0-4 EPC) to just 196 yards of total offense. Running back Nick Williams rushed for 65 yards on 11 totes before suffering a game-ending injury. Williams took a helmet-to-helmet hit and lay motionless on the field for a few minutes.
Williams was transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital. According to a North Lenoir spokesperson, Williams complained of a headache, but did not suffer a concussion. He does have a strained neck and was released.
Goldsboro concludes regular-season play Friday at North Pitt, while North Lenoir faces Greene Central. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m.
