MOUNT OLIVE -- Lyndsay Brennan and Gina Dos Santos each scored in the first eight minutes and Mount Olive celebrated Senior Day with a 2-0 victory over in-state Conference Carolinas rival Lees-McRae.

Kate Painter assisted on both goals for the Trojans, who earned their seventh consecutive win. Mount Olive (7-6-3 overall) moved into a fourth-place tie in the league standings at 5-1-3 and remained in contention for hosting a quarterfinal-round tournament match.

Brennan scored in the 6th minute as Painter received a ball from April Jacobs. Dos Santos added a goal two minutes later on a deflection off the Bobcats' keeper. It was Dos Santos' fifth goal in her last four outings.

Keepers Amanda Huber and Jenn Sastre combined for the Trojans' fourth shutout in their last six matches. Huber and Sastre had two saves apiece.

Mount Olive entertains Tusculum at 3 p.m. today.

Trojan men fall

MOUNT OLIVE -- No. 2-ranked Lees-McRae notched two goals in the first 16 minutes and rolled past Mount Olive 5-1 on Saturday afternoon at Amon Field.

The Bobcats (14-1-1) improved to 8-1 against Conference Carolinas opposition, while the Trojans (6-11) dropped to 1-7 in the league.

Lee Squires tallied two first-half goals and Matt Lacey supplied one goal as the Bobcats grabbed a three-goal advantage at intermission. Gary Challinor put LMC ahead 4-0 early in the second half and Berin Boracic converted a penalty kick to conclude the visitors' scoring.

Mount Olive freshman Sean Keener scored his first-ever collegiate goal late in the second half to avert the shutout. It was the final home match for four seniors -- Adam Caston, Chase Smith, Brad Carroll and Frank Stilley.

The Trojans visit Barton on Tuesday.

Volleyball splits

MOUNT OLIVE -- Alicia Mote recorded a double-double -- 18 kills, 12 digs -- as Mount Olive swept in-state rival Belmont Abbey 30-11, 30-26, 30-19 at Kornegay Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans (14-12 overall) rose to 10-5 in Conference Carolinas play and rebounded from a disappointing loss to Limestone (S.C.) less than 24 hours earlier in the weekend. Sam Mitchell added a double-double -- 13 kills and 19 digs in the straight-set win.

Setters Joanie Werling and Mariangelix Cordero combined for 40 assists. Corie Skislak posted four blocks. Racey Bartley and Kailey Preece contributed three blocks apiece.

Mitchell came within one kill of matching her career-high with a 28-kill effort in Friday's 25-30, 19-30, 30-21, 26-30 defeat. Mote finished with 16 kills, 10 digs and two service aces.

Bartley added 13 kills and a team-leading five blocks. Cordero dished out a career-best 45 assists, while Mallory Peavler emerged the defensive leader with 23 digs.
