C.B. Aycock nearly pulls off upset

WILSON -- There are no rewards for valiant efforts.

Or Charles B. Aycock would be near perfect eight weeks into the high school football season. The Golden Falcons, instead, sit on two wins suffering yet another disheartening loss Friday evening.

Torez Jones' 51-yard interception return for a touchdown sealed Wilson Hunt's 19-12 victory on the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference scene Friday evening. The Warriors (8-1 overall) remained tied atop the league standings with Southern Wayne at 3-0.

"We're probably three or four mistakes from being a team that's sitting here with six or seven wins," Aycock head coach Randy Pinkowski said. "We've been right in every game. I think going into the end of the season we're starting to hit our stride offensively, and we've played good defense all season long.

"We're starting to find out what we can do. Let's just hope it's not too little too late."

Robert Schick connected on the go-ahead score, a 36-yard field goal, with just under four minutes left in regulation. Jones ended Aycock's final comeback bid with his pick six -- one of four interceptions thrown by the Golden Falcons.

"We were down 13-12 with less than a minute go with no timeouts," Pinkowski said. "We had to come out throwing the ball and that's not our strong suit. Everybody knows Hunt has one of the best secondarys around.

"They were able to play back and wait to break on the ball and they picked one off."

Despite limiting Hunt to just 23 total yards of total offense, tieing a state record for first downs allowed (none) and causing three turnovers, C.B. Aycock just couldn't pull off the upset.

Hunt's first 10 points resulted in Golden Falcon miscues.

"It literally came down to mistakes," Aycock head coach Randy Pinkowski said. "Good football teams make you pay for mistakes. It was just one of thse nights. We played great defense, offensively we moved the football pretty good...it just wasn't enough."

The Golden Falcons trailed 10-9 at halftime and took the lead early in the fourth quarter on Alex Roosen's 22-yard field goal. Roosen nailed a 28-yard field goal in the first half. Quarterback Ian Calder's five-yard touchdown run accounted for Aycock's other score.

Jarrett Covar led the Golden Falcons' defense with eight tackles. Kendre Reid made six stops. Michael King added an interception.

C.B. Aycock (2-6 overall, 1-2 ECC) entertains county rival Eastern Wayne next Friday.
