Wayne Christian boys claim inaugural Invitational cross country crown

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Josh Magnus emerged the top individual runner and led Wayne Christian to the team title in the inaugural Wayne Christian Invitational contested at Cliffs of the Neuse State Park.

Magnus ran the hilly and challenging 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, 36 seconds. Teammates Justin Brathwaite, Noah Kearney and Jay Kornegay each posted a top-10 time for the Eagles, who compiled 21 points.

Princeton, led by Adam Peedin, claimed second with 34 points. Greenville Christian took third with 65 points. Kerr-Vance and Wilson Christian did not have enough runners to record a score.

On the girls' side, Wilson Christian seized the top five spots and notched a perfect score of 15. Olivia Booker led Princeton second place (42 points), followed by Greenville Christian (62). Neither Wayne Christian nor Kerr-Vance had enough runners participate.

Rachel Renfrow crossed the finish line in 23:32 for the Chargers, a first-year varsity team. Teammates Sarah Treadwell, Brandi Evans, Courtney Tabron and Jill Graham finished behind Renfrow.

Booker logged a time of 25:01, while teammate Brittany Rainbow claimed the eighth spot in 25:50. Logan Dawson and Charity Wright paced Wayne Christian with seventh- and ninth-place performances.

Soccer

Tigers nip Eagles

RALEIGH -- Despite falling victim to the "Alexander Special," defending state champion Trinity Academy denied Wayne Christian its first-ever Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tournament title bid on Friday afternoon.

Hunter Bostwick collected the game-winning goal in the 71st minute as the Tigers edged the Eagles 2-1. With the victory, No. 1-ranked Trinity received the automatic bid to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Playoffs.

Garrison Beavers gave Trinity a 1-0 lead 27 minutes into the opening half.

The Eagles (12-5-1) answered with their Alexander connection -- Greg scoring off Brian's cross into the penalty area in the 28th minute. The score remained tied as the teams played in the middle of the field.

Second-year Wayne Christian head coach Daryl Anderson complimented the defensive effort of Matt Rouse, Travis Thomas and Jeremy Jefferson. Jefferson prevented Garrett Bostwick from getting open looks on goal.

"We just played an outstanding game ... our best of the year," said Anderson.

Keeper Eric Williams, named the Carolina Christian South Division player of the year, recorded 15 saves. Norris, Rouse, Brian Alexander and Hayden Gardner earned all-conference and all-tournament accolades.

Norris was named the tournament's most outstanding player.

Wayne Christian's postseason fate now rests in the NCISAA 1-A selection committee's hands. Anderson is confident his team will receive a top-eight seed and host the program's first-ever playoff contest.

The bids will be announced Wednesday afternoon.

Golf

Larison leads CBA

KENLY -- Lauren Larison seized medalist honors with a nine-hole round of 55 as Charles B. Aycock defeated North Johnston and Princeton in a triangular meet at Cardinal Golf Course.

The Golden Falcons posted a team total of 126. Additional individual scores were not available. The host Panthers finished second at 182, followed by the Bulldawgs at 209.

Aycock returns to action Monday in an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course. Tee time is 3 p.m.

JV sports

* Football -- Wilson Hunt edged Eastern Wayne 26-20 on Thursday evening. Jon Midgette rushed for a 55-yard touchdown, Lamar Best returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown and Ryan Jones rushed for 43 yards. Mac Stover completed four passes for 85 yards, including a 50-yard scoring strike to Brandon Williams. Defensive leaders were Williams and Chris Bell. The Warriors (6-1 overall) dropped to 1-1 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference.

Middle schools

* Volleyball -- Grantham turned back Greenwood 25-27, 25-17, 25-22, 25-20 during their Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference match. Madison Davis led the Bulldogs with 10 service aces and five kills. Georganna Thompson (four kills, three aces), Jamika Bowen (two kills), Marisa Legg (two kills, three aces), Patricia Purvis (one kill, four aces) and Meredith Best (four aces) contributed to the four-set win. Grantham (3-4 overall) improved to 2-3 in WCMSAC Division II play.

* Football -- Dillard defeated Rosewood 18-8. Karon Alston rambled 70 yards for a touchdown, while Octavius Thompson added touchdowns on runs of 10 and 25. Dillard (3-1 overall, 1-0 WCMSAC Division I) entertains Eastern Wayne next Thursday.
