Game of the Week: Aycock knocks off Kinston

PIKEVILLE -- As Charles B. Aycock gathered into its post-game huddle Friday evening, one resounding message could be heard echoing out of more than one player's mouth -- "This feels good."

The Golden Falcons put together arguably their most complete game of the season, and cruised past Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference foe Kinston 30-13 on homecoming at Hardy Talton Stadium.

C.B. Aycock improved to 2-5 overall and evened its ECC worksheet at 1-1.

"This is great for our players. It's great for the fans," Golden Falcons head coach Randy Pinkowski said. "Maybe we gained some of our confidence and got a little swagger back. We put together the complete game tonight."

After Kinston turned an Aycock fumble into an early touchdown, the Golden Falcons hardly resembled the team which had just one victory coming into the game.

Quarterback Ian Calder put an Aycock offense that had struggled to move the ball this season on his shoulders all night. Calder's 27-yard pass touchdown pass to Dalton Lewellan late in the first quarter evened things at 7-7.

"That play set the tone for the game," Calder said. "The backside was supposed to do a swing, and we never ran the swing. We ran the play and threw the deep ball, and it came out good for us.

"Everyone got very enthusiastic after that, we were having a lot of fun."

The first of Kinston's three lost fumbles help set up Jacob Pendleton's 18-yard jaunt to the end zone early in the second quarter. Alex Roosen added a 35-yard field goal before halftime, which gave the Golden Falcons a 17-7 lead.

Calder slipped a couple of tackles and raced 80 yards to paydirt on the first play from scrimmage to start the second half. Calder added an eight-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and finished with 169 yards rushing on just 13 carries.

"The blocking wasn't that great on that play," Calder said. "But our line, they just kept going and going. Even though they didn't do something right, they just kept going and going and we broke a run. It was on from there."

Aycock racked up 349 yards of total offense.

Plagued by turnovers all season, the trend continued for Kinston on Friday. The Vikings gave the football away five times, while Aycock had just two turnovers. Quarterback Donavan Ingram was picked off twice including a interception at the Aycock 1-yard line.

The Vikings managed just 166 total yards of total offense, including 43 rushing.

"Usually we're on the other end of that turnover situation," Pinkowski said. "We've been creating a lot of turnovers, now unfortunately we've been turning the ball over ourselves right much. Tonight we didn't do it, and those things give you extra possessions."

"This a big boost for my kids. We played the way I envisioned us playing from the beginning of the year. That bodes well for us going into the end of the season here. If we can continue to play like that, we can put some pressure on some people."

The Golden Falcons visit defending ECC co-champion Wilson Hunt next Friday. Kinston (2-6, 0-2 ECC) hopes to snap its five-game skid at home against Southern Wayne.
