Senior David Wilson collected the game's lone goal as Wayne Country Day squeezed past Faith Christian-Rocky Mount 1-0 in a Class 1-A Coastal Plains Independent Conference contest Tuesday afternoon.

Wilson scored in the 75th minute off an assist from teammate Matt Wolf.

"It was a great game all-around by our team," said WCDS head coach Baron Heinemann. "We played an excellent passing game today."

Goalie Ryan Ford recorded three saves for the Chargers, who improved to 8-6-2 overall and 4-4-1 in CPIC play. They conclude regular-season play next Tuesday at Kerr-Vance Academy.

Tennis

Gators fare well

Spring Creek's Jamie Johnson won three matches on Tuesday to capture the Carolina 1-A Conference tournament singles title and qualify for next week's N.C. High School Athletic Association eastern regionals next week.

Johnson improved to 19-0 on the season, with victories over Rosewood's Jillian Casey, Sarah Wood of North Johnston and Ayden-Grifton's Brandi Hughes.

By virtue of finishing in the top four, Hughes, Jenny Coley of North Duplin, and Wood also earned a trip to the regionals.

The Gators doubles team of Isabelle Messelken and Mary Elizabeth West also clinched a regional berth. Messelken and West knocked off Amber Weaver and Haley Newsome (North Johnston) 6-1, 6-0, and Missy Bailey and Erica Nichols (Rosewood) 6-1, 6-0.

Bailey-Nichols defeated Brittany Coley and Elizabeth Lane of North Duplin to earn their spot in the doubles finals. Coley-Lane also secured a bid to the regionals.

Cross country

EW earns ECC split

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne took to the cross country course at Wilson Hunt on Tuesday, in an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference showdown with Hunt and Wilson Beddingfield.

The Warriors girls downed Hunt 22-33, while the Eastern Wayne boys fell to Hunt 26-35. Beddingfield finished third with a score of 67.

Eastern Wayne's Leanna Kirkland was the top female runner, finishing the 3.1-mile course in a time of 23 minutes, 22 seconds. The Warriors Tim Wright, finished second to Hunt's Bobby White.

Eastern Wayne will host a meet with Hunt and Charles B. Aycock on Tuesday.

Volleyball

Eagles move on

Wayne Christian advanced to the semifinals of the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tournament with a 25-15, 19-25, 25-23, 17-25, 17-15 win over visiting Crossroads Christian on Tuesday.

Allison Rose had 15 digs and five aces for the Eagles. Katie Daniels had a team-high 10 kills to go along with three aces. Traci Davis and Kaitlyn Kusuda each finished with eight kills. Brooke Norris handed out 20 assists and tallied four kills.

Wayne Christian (7-7 overall) resumes tournament play Thursday in Durham.

Rosewood prevails

Rosewood shook off a slow start to send North Duplin home with a 20-25, 25-19, 25-14, 26-24 loss in Carolina 1-A Conference play on Tuesday.

Paige Babb handed out 14 assists for the Eagles, and also tallied three digs and two aces. Taylor Johnson pounded out 13 kills, three aces and a block.

Heather Hudson had nine kills, three digs and three blocks for the Rebels. Sam Cates finished with six assists, six aces, four kills and four digs. Katlyn Eloshway and Katie Swanzey each had five digs and three aces.

North Duplin is now 4-5 in conference play and will entertain Spring Creek on Thursday. Rosewood is 6-10 overall and 3-6 in conference play. The Eagles visit Princeton on Thursday.

Chargers roll

OXFORD -- Wayne Country Day breezed past Oxford 25-11, 25-19, 25-5 in their Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference match Tuesday afternoon.

Jessica Lewis led the Chargers attack with 14 kills, while Sterling Coggins handed out 11 assists. Stephanie Sykes served up nine aces, and finished with four kills and three digs. Shelly Sullivan had 14 assists to go along with six aces, four kills and three digs.

Wayne Country Day is 12-4 overall and 9-2 in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play. The Chargers host Oakwood on Tuesday.

Dawgs get road win

AYDEN -- Amber Wood passed out 27 assists, Ashley Braswell hammed out 18 kills and Princeton downed Ayden-Grifton 25-16, 19-25, 25-13, 25-20 in Carolina 1-A Conference play on Tuesday.

Devon Murphy finished with nine kills and two digs, and Brittany Baker tallied five kills, three assists and two aces.

Princeton improves to 10-8 overall and 6-3 in conference play. The Bulldogs host Rosewood on Thursday.

Golf

Walnut Creek Ladies

Charlotte Campbell emerged play of the day winner in this week's tournament.

Linda Watson had low gross and Josie Ottiviani earned low net in the first flight. Evelyn Rose (low gross) and Nancy Satterfield (low net) took home honors from the second flight.

Mary Ann Sutton and Pete Reaves tied for low putts for the field.

JV sports

* Volleyball -- Rosewood defeated North Duplin 27-25, 25-14 in Carolina 1-A Conference action on Tuesday. Angelica Favela had two assists, two aces and two digs for the Rebels. Kailey Odom finished with two aces and two digs. North Duplin is now 1-9 overall, and will host Spring Creek on Thursday. The Eagles improve to 5-9 overall and 5-4 in conference play. Rosewood travels to Princeton on Thursday.

* Volleyball -- Charles B. Aycock picked up a 26-24, 25-22 Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference win at Eastern Wayne on Tuesday. Victoria Benton had seven kills and six aces for the Golden Falcons. Cara Fredrick added five kills. Aycock is 8-7 overall and 5-4 in the ECC. The Golden Falcons visit Southern Wayne on Thursday.

* Boys' soccer -- Short-handed Wayne Country Day battled Faith Christian-Rocky Mount to a 0-0 draw Tuesday afternoon. The Chargers played without two captains due to injuries which have depleted the varsity roster.
