Trojans blank Converse

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Freshman Kaysea Singular tallied a goal and an assist to help Mount Olive's senior class set a new school record in career wins on Saturday against Converse.

The Trojans defeated Converse 4-0 in Conference Carolinas women's soccer.

The win gave Trojan seniors Gina Dos Santos, Emily Escolas, April Jacobs, Jackie Jimenez, Kate Painter and Caitlyn Wright their 53rd career victory.

Mount Olive (4-6-2 overall, 3-1-2 Conference Carolinas) broke a scoreless tie as Kate Painter took a restart after a Converse foul and Lyndsay Brennan put the ball in on a one touch in the 20th minute. The goal was Brennan's fifth of the season, moving her into a three-way tie for the team lead with Alyecia Higgins and April Jacobs.

The Trojans took a 1-0 lead into halftime before pulling away in the second half. Jimenez scored an unassisted goal in the 60th minute to extend the lead to 2-0.

Mount Olive broke the game open with a pair of goals five minutes apart late in the contest. Singular scored her first collegiate goal in the 70th minute off a double assist from Dos Santos and Lauren Condon. Dos Santos ranks nationally in the top 40 in assists per game.

Singular combined with Escolas to assist on Portia Taylor's first goal of the season in the 75th minute to close out the scoring.

Mount Olive returns to action Wednesday as the Trojans play host to Southern Virginia in a non-conference match-up. Match time is 7 p.m. at Amon Field.

Volleyball

GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Mount Olive entered Saturday's game in a three-way tie for first place in the Conference Carolinas standings, but the Trojans were denied sole possession of the lead, falling to Limestone 30-28, 30-28, 30-23 in women's volleyball.

Alicia Mote led the Trojans with 15 kills, while Sam Mitchell added 13 kills to extend her streak of double-figure matches to 18.

Mount Olive (12-10 overall, 8-3 Conference Carolinas) began the day tied with Limestone (11-12, 9-2) and Lees-McRae for the conference lead. The Trojans are now in third place, one game behind Limestone and a half-game behind Lees-McRae.

Setters Joanie Werling (19 assists) and Mariangelix Cordero (15 assists) combined for 34 assists for the Trojans.

Mount Olive next travels to Spartanburg, S.C., Friday at 7 p.m. to take on Converse, then heads to Anderson, S.C., Saturday at 6:30 p.m. to face Anderson.
