AYDEN -- Kristin Smith hammered out 20 kills and Brooke Alberston had 18 assists as Spring Creek downed Class 1-A Carolina Conference foe Ayden-Grifton 25-18, 25-11, 25-13 on Tuesday.

Smith added four aces and two blocks. Ashley Barwick chipped in 11 assists, five aces and four kills. Tasha Whitfield finished with 10 kills, two aces and a pair of blocks.

The Gators are 11-2 overall and 5-2 in Carolina 1-A Conference play. Spring Creek entertains Rosewood on Thursday.

Hawks breeze in EPC

LaGRANGE -- Jordan Hudson handed out 38 assists to help guide North Lenoir past Tarboro 25-14, 25-13, 25-16 in Eastern Plains 2-A conference play on Tuesday.

Marrisa Lanier tallied 11 kills and Kayla Sutton had nine kills and six blocks. Conner Jordan added 13 service points, eight kills and three blocks.

North Lenoir is 16-0 overall and 7-0 in the EPC. The Hawks continue league play at North Pitt on Thursday.

Rebels survive

PRINCETON -- North Duplin outlasted Princeton in five games 19-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-19, 15-13 to earn a key Carolina 1-A Conference win on Tuesday.

Heather Hudson had 14 kills, seven digs and three blocks for the Rebels. Sam Cates handed out 10 assists to go along with 27 service points, seven aces and three kills. Katlyn Eloshway had 30 service points, seven aces and six digs. Katie Swanzey tallied 14 digs and four kills, and Felicia Lynch netted 11 assists and seven digs.

"The team really wanted to get back on the winning track and wanted this game," North Duplin coach Heather Best said. "We got down early, but fought back with defense and net play."

Danielle Mitchell finished with 10 digs and an ace for Princeton. Amber Wood handed out 17 assists and added six aces. Devon Murphy chipped in six aces, eight digs, and four kills.

North Duplin is 5-6 overall and 3-4 in Carolina 1-A play. The Rebels host Ayden-Grifton on Thursday.

Princeton is 8-8 overall and 4-3 in conference play. The Bulldogs host North Johnston on Thursday.

Vikes sweep CBA

KINSTON -- Charles B. Aycock lost in three games 25-13, 25-11, 25-19 in Eastern Carolina 3-A play to Kinston on Tuesday.

Lee Ann Sager had five kills and Ashley Toler added three kills. Michele Pratt and Anna Sullivan each had three aces.

Aycock is 2-11 overall and 1-6 in the ECC. The Golden Falcons continue conference play on Thursday when they host Wilson Hunt.

Eagles dealt loss

Taylor Johnson recorded 13 kills and seven blocks in Rosewood's 25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 26-24 upset of league-leading North Johnston.

Paige Babb handed out 19 assists for the Eagles, who handed the Panthers their second loss in seven conference outings this season. Ashley Williams added six kills and three blocks.

Babb, Jen Hall and Christie Phillips combined for five aces.

Rosewood (5-9 overall) improved to 2-5 in the conference and visits Spring Creek on Thursday.

Soccer

Chargers fall in CPIC

WILSON -- State-ranked Greenfield collected two goals within a nine-minute stretch in the opening half and turned back Wayne Country Day 3-1 in a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference match.

Senior captain David Wilson notched the Chargers' lone goal off a free kick from sophomore Will Wolf.

"We worked the ball around Greenfield much better than they did around us," said WCDS head coach Baron Heinemann. "The difference was their speed and their ability to finish where we could not."

The Knights, ranked No. 3 in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association, concluded the scoring in the second half.

Wayne Country Day (7-6-2) dipped to 3-4-1 in CPIC play.

Rams triumph

TARBORO -- Greene Central clinched the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference's top seed for the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs with a 6-3 win over Tarboro on Tuesday.

Puja Patel, Elizabeth McLawhorn, Cally Hudson, Abby Sugg and Lauren Carraway were all singles winners for the Rams. Patel-Carraway also earned a doubles victory for Greene Central.

The Rams improved to 17-2 overall and 6-0 in EPC play. Greene Central visits EPC foe Farmville Central on Thursday.

Spring Creek improved to 11-0 in Carolina 1-A Conference play with a 6-1 victory at Rosewood on Tuesday.

Isabelle Messelken, Mary Elizabeth West, Jamie Johnson, Jamison Mossberg and Rachel Lewis each had singles wins for the Gators. Marreke Parrish earned a singles victory for the Eagles.

The number two and number three doubles matches were not played.

Spring Creek (11-3 overall) visits conference foe North Johnston today.

SMITHFIELD -- Wayne Christian cruised past Johnston Christian 9-0 in non-conference play on Tuesday afternoon.

Brooke Barfield, Laura Lee Hodson, Katie Fairchild, Cynthia Burroughs, Samantha Reeves and Regan Hinton each earned singles wins for the Eagles. The duos of Barfield-Hodson, Fairchild-Burroughs and Reeves-Hinton picked up doubles wins for Wayne Christian.

The Eagles are 6-4 overall and 6-0 in the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference. Wayne Christian will host Flora MacDonald on Thursday.

CALYPSO -- North Duplin swept a doubleheader from Wallace-Rose Hill on Tuesday in non-conference play.

The Rebels took match one 5-2, and triumphed 5-4 in match two.

Rebecca Coats, Brittany Coley, Jodie Williamson, Sarah Jackson and Elizabeth Lane all earned singles wins for North Duplin.

The Rebels are 9-3 overall and will compete in the conference tournament at Herman Park next week.

Eagles fall short

RALEIGH -- Josh Magnus finished in a meet-best time of 17 minutes, nine seconds, but it wasn't enough as Wayne Christian finished second in both the boys and girls sides of a meet with Wake Christian, Greenville Christian, Wilmington Christian and Fletcher Academy.

Wake Christian tallied 26 points to finish just ahead of Wayne Christian's score of 34. The Eagles girls finished with a score of 39, while Wake Christian earned a 27.

The Eagles' top female runner was Logan Dawson, who finished second with a time of 24:15. Wayne Christian returns to action on Thursday at Cliffs of the Neuse against Princeton High School and Wilson Christian.

Golf

Novella Zambelli won play of the day in this week's tournament.

Linda Watson aced low gross and Mary Morris low net. Betty Holloway won low putts.

JV sports

* Boys' soccer -- Greenfield scored twice in the second half to defeat Wayne Country Day 2-0 in a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference match.

* Tennis -- Caroline Byrd and Dena Turnage won the third and final doubles match of the day to help Greene Central past Eastern Wayne 5-4 in non-conference action. Jessica Gray, Casey Perry and Abbey Dail each had singles wins for the Rams. Brandi Walston, Janielle Daniel and Joann Talton were singles winners for Eastern Wayne.

* Volleyball -- North Lenoir rallied to beat Tarboro 24-26, 25-23, 25-10 in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference action. Courtney Hill had 18 service points and seven kills in the Hawks. Kristen Davenport added four kills. The Hawks are now 13-0 overall and 4-0 in EPC play. North Lenoir travels to North Pitt on Thursday.

* Volleyball -- Spring Creek's bid for its first win of the season fell a bit short in the Gators 25-20, 25-18 loss at Ayden-Grifton. Randi Oxendine had four assists and two kills. Mitzi Artega and Mayra Wences added two kills apiece. Spring Creek hosts Rosewood on Thursday.

* Volleyball -- Princeton topped North Duplin 25-18, 25-18. Brantlee Barwick had five digs and an ace for the Rebels. Angelica Favela chipped in three digs and an ace.

* Volleyball -- Kinston defeated C.B. Aycock 26-24, 23-25, 25-18 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play. Victoria Benton recorded 10 kills and Cara Frederick served an ace for the Golden Falcons (6-6 overall), who dropped to 4-3 in conference play.

* Volleyball -- North Johnston edged Rosewood 23-25, 25-9, 25-19 in their Carolina 1-A Conference match Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles' Brittney Cabala had two kills, one assist and one service ace. Hannah Giddens (one block, one kill), Holly Jones (ace), Rachel Kornegay (one kill, one ace), Chelsea Sawkiw (one kill, two assists) and Megan Church (one kill, two assists, one ace) also contributed.

Middle schools

* Volleyball -- Norwayne turned back Brogden 0 25-7, 25-7, 25-15 to remain unbeaten at 5-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Brooke Bell had 14 service points, and Kayla Williams added nine service points. Norwayne will host Greenwood on Thursday.

Neuse River Football

Eastern Wayne 18, Boys Club 13 -- Lee Daniels found Andrew Keel on a 10-yard touchdown pass to cap Eastern Wayne's opening drive in their Neuse River Youth Football League game Tuesday evening. Devonte Corum added touchdown runs of 45 and 50 yards.
