SNOW HILL -- Strong matches by Elizabeth McLawhorn and Cally Hudson lifted Greene Central to a 6-3 win over 3-A power Charles B. Aycock on Monday afternoon.

McLawhorn held off a Emilee Quinn to come away with a 6-1, 6-4 victory. Hudson came from a set down to top Kristen Bennett 4-6, 7-5, 11-9.

"Elizabeth McLawhorn turned in one of her best performances of the season in the first set, and she did a great job of fighting off a comeback in the second set," said Greene Central coach Donald Clark. "I was pleased with Cally's rally for a third-set, tie break win. She just kept finding a way to get the ball back all day long and prevailed at the end."

Puja Patel, Abby Sugg and Lauren Carraway all added singles points for the Rams.

For Aycock, Courtney Barnes was the lone singles winner.

"Greene Central's depth in the lineup was too much for us to overcome," said Aycock coach Luke Vail. "Courtney played outstanding tennis."

Aycock's tandems of Barnes-Quinn and Kristen Prosser-Bennett both turned in strong outings in No. 1 and 2 doubles play to win.

Barfield leads WCS

BUIES CREEK -- Brooke Barfield led a sweep in singles play for Wayne Christian as it topped Cape Fear Christian 8-1 in Carolina Christian 1-A action on Monday.

Top seeded Barfield defeated Kaitlyn Tart 8-2 while second seeded Katie Fairchild beat Katie Joyner 8-1.

Samantha Reeves, Regan Hinton, Rebecca James and Lindsey Whaley all earned singles points for the Eagles.

Wayne Christian will next host Flora McDonald at Herman Park on Thursday.

Soccer

Riddle's goal lifts EW

Richard Riddle scored in the 69th minute to lift Eastern Wayne to a 2-1 win over Kinston in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference action.

John Choi scored the Warriors other goal in the first half on a penalty kick following a foul against Chris Knobling.

Mohammed Ali had Kinston's only goal later in the opening half.

Eastern Wayne improves to 5-6 overall (3-2 ECC) and will next host Southern Wayne on Wednesday.

Rams spank Hawks

LaGRANGE -- Greene Central presented too much fire power as it topped North Lenoir in an Eastern Plains 2-A Conference matchup 6-2.

Ethan Schilf and Jaime Ellison scored for the Hawks while Bryce Grady picked up 13 saves in goal.

The Hawks (7-7-3 overall) dropped to 3-2 in EPC play.

Volleyball

Warriors sweep Fike

Brittani Billups recorded a triple-double and Eastern Wayne swept Wilson Fike 25-19, 25-17, 25-16 on Monday evening.

Billups, a senior outside hitter, provided 17 kills, 10 service aces and 10 digs against the Golden Demons. She also handed out four assists for the Warriors, who remained unbeaten in 15 outings.

Jordei Osby collected 10 kills, two digs and six blocks. Carrie Adams added seven kills, four aces and seven digs. Anna Hajjar served six aces to go along with six digs.

Senior setter Brooke Newsome dished out 24 assists.

Alysa Artis (five kills), Regan Stoneburner (five digs), Brianna Williams (four aces, five digs) and Laverne Jones (two digs) also contributed to the non-conference win.

Eastern Wayne continues play today at Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference member Wilson Hunt.

Sykes powers WCDS

Stephanie Sykes recorded a game-high 14 aces and added four kills to lead Wayne Country Day to a 25-10, 25-10, 25-11 victory over Goldsboro.

Jessica Lewis added five kills while Erin Taylor chipped in with five aces, three kills and two digs for the Chargers.

Wayne Country Day also got three aces and two kills from Shelly Sullivan, a dig and an ace from Kayla Planagan and two aces from Kim Martell.

The Chargers improve to 10-3 overall and next host Wayne Christian today.

Faith beats Berean

Faith Christian defeated Berean Christian 25-23, 21-25, 25-23, 16-25, 15-12 to move into second place in the Coastal West 2-A Region.

Jillian Sanders tallied a team-high seven aces for the Conquerors.

The victory improves Faith Christian to 7-5 overall (7-4 NCCSA). The Conquerors will next travel to Falls Road Baptist on Oct. 8.

JV sports

* Boys' soccer -- Gregory Alexander scored both goals, one in each half, as Wayne Christian shut out Wayne Country Day 2-0. The Eagles improved to 5-0-3 overall.

* Boys' soccer -- North Lenoir concluded its season with a win over Parrott Academy on Monday. Tyler Sanders, Gray Phillips and Luke Baird all contributed goals for the Hawks. Hunter Cornegay made three saves in goal for North Lenoir (2-6).

* Girls' tennis -- Eastern Wayne topped Southern Wayne 9-0 on Monday afternoon. Singles winners for the Warriors were Miller Delbridge, Warner Underwood, Taylor Falcone, Brandi Walston, Janielle Daniel, Joann Talton. The tandems of Underwood-Delbridge, Leah Smith-Morgan Corbett and Brooke Butts-Caroline Jones all won in doubles action for Eastern Wayne.

* Girls' tennis -- Greene Central took four singles matches to turn back Charles B. Aycock 7-2 on Monday afternoon. Jessica Gray, Abby Dail, Caroline Byrd and Dena Turnage all won their individual matches for the Rams. Hollie Baker and Nicole Kessler provided singles points for the Golden Falcons. The doubles teams of Casey Perry-Dail, Meredith Carraway-Gray and Byrd-Turnage were all winners as well for the Rams. Aycock drops to 9-4 overall and will next host Southern Wayne on Thursday.

Middle schools

* Boys' soccer -- Brogden held on to defeat Greenwood 8-3 on Monday afternoon. Jean Pierre Ponce recorded two goals and Josh Hahn the other for Greenwood. In goal, Sarah Marquis recorded nine saves for Greenwood who fell to 0-4 and will next travel to Norwayne on Thursday.

* Volleyball -- Eastern Wayne bested Dillard in three games, 25-14, 25-9, 25-18 on Monday. For Dillard Ashykia McBride, Kasheika Wallace, Cherisse White and Tatiana Hill all served well. Dillard drops to 0-5 (0-2) and will next host a double header with Spring Creek on Oct. 8.

* Volleyball -- Karen Best served up seven aces to lead Spring Creek to a 25-9, 25-22, 20-25, 26-24 hard-fought victory over Grantham. Whitney Frederick added two aces for the Gators while Dorian Wences, Yusley Lares and Amber Edwards provided one ace apiece. Spring Creek improves to 3-2 overall (2-1) and will next travel to Brogden on Thursday.
