C.B. Aycock has no trouble with Saints

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's performance on Monday night was a bit offensive -- especially for Southern Wayne.

Six different Golden Falcons scored in an 11-2 rout of the Saints at Hardy Talton Stadium. Aycock improved to 10-2-1 overall and remained unbeaten in five Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference matches.

Tyson Pearson's header into the back of the net in the eighth minute started the offensive explosion. A pair of goals from Jorge Delgado in the 12th and 14th minutes had Aycock on top 3-0 before the first half was even midway over. David Burke found Tucker Pearson off a throw-in in the 26th minute, which sent Aycock into the half with a comfortable 4-0 cushion.

However, despite appearing to have the game in hand, Aycock assistant coach Byron Adkins wasn't entirely pleased with the first 40 minutes.

"The first four goals, three of those were off throw-ins," Adkins said. "You like to score goals, but you like to see goals come from the run of play as opposed to set pieces.

"We struggled and then the goals started to come, and kept coming, and coming and coming. We woke up a little bit."

Not to be outdone by his teammates, Alex Rodriguez started the second half by tallying a natural hat trick (three consecutive goals) in just over seven minutes. Rodriguez got his scoring spree started by tapping home a deflection off a shot from Delgado in the 43rd minute. He converted a pair of free kicks from atop the 18-yard box in the 48th and 50th minutes, and in just like that the lead had ballooned to 7-0.

Carlos Zometa helped Southern Wayne avoid the shutout when he beat Aycock's backup keeper Charlie Howell in the 53rd minute. Zometa also found the back of the net in the 63rd minute, but on this night it was the Golden Falcons' offense that took center stage. Aycock finished with a 23-5 shots on goal advantage.

Tyler Ruffin, Pearson, Thomas Oliver and Ryan Martin each tallied second-half goals for the Golden Falcons. The extra offensive output proved that opponents can't just key on defending Rodriguez and Delgado.

"It's good for the team for somebody else to score other than Jorge and Alex," Adkins said. "It's always good to see other kids score goals and get their name in the paper, too. If you don't come out and play us well, we'll score 11 or 12 goals.

"Everybody has to pull their weight. If Alex gets hurt or Jorge gets hurt then somebody has to step in and fill their shoes. Games like these are important for kids to come off the bench and get some playing time in case things like that happen."

Undefeated in the ECC, Aycock remains motivated by a goal its had since the first day of practice -- repeating as conference champions.

"The conference title is the number one goal we set out for ourselves at the beginning of the year," Adkins said. "To win a conference title is paramount for us. We want to be back-to-back conference champions and tournament champions, they want to defend.

"They want to do better than the class that came before them. It's very important to stay focused."

The Golden Falcons begin second-half conference play at home Wednesday against Wilson Beddingfield. Southern Wayne (3-7-1, 0-5-0 ECC) visit Eastern Wayne.
